Clarkson ruined it all at the end though, with a very negative summing up. Primarily in heavily criticising the fuel consumption of 31mpg on his test, as the most serious and biggest flaw with the i8.

Rather unfair, as he should also have said that a ICE car with similar performance driven as hard would have given perhaps 50-75% of that MPG.

Otherwise his other comments were fair enough though.

I think he summed it up well. i8 is the future and M3 is the best of where we have come from. It's the change of guards. But the Gen1 i8 still needs fine tuning, just like any other 1st gen products.

Good news is that the new guard is still pretty awesome.

It was a classic Clarkson, I enjoyed it very much. This is his trademark journalistic style, it's more about personal opinion than hard facts.

Downloaded the episode, not as a good of a film as the E9X review in series 10 they did in Spain, but still enjoyable.

That's a significant difference between what BMW claims as fuel consumption and real world. I'm not saying BMW is wrong and Clarkson is right but how did BMW come up with estimate?

It was a good segment. These types of reviews is why I prefer the Euro journalists/media over American equivalents. Not because Clarkson's verdict on the BMW's were positive because he reviewed the car as it is in it's current state. If the US media did this piece, most of the review would have been complaints how BMW used electric steering, how it doesn't sound like the old V8 and the use of ActiveSound - all combined to say how this makes the M3/M4 a bad car, not how good it is with all the other stuff which is clearly superior to the E9X M3.

Agreed. He should really have said that he drove it like he stole it and STILL got 31mpg out of it...when a 911 or R8 would have been half that...at best.

The other points about rear visibility, the window sill and the boot were all correct and should be made.

All in all I thought it was fair review that was bombastic and very enthusiastic (for Clarkson) towards a hybrid car, rather let down slightly by one misjudged and slightly misleading comment at the end. Unfortunately, that's the one thing most people are going to remember

Having driven both I can quite agree with his opinion during the drive of both cars, but I would not agree on chosing the i8.
Also it is clear that the way he drove it, no car would ever reach factory claimed MPG.

I just think the i8 is (just a little bit) boring to drive compared to the M3.
And given the point that the i8 is the price of an M6 in my country that would make a no brainer for me.

Good review of the M3 but waaaaay too little coverage. I know it was a setup for the more detailed review of the i8 but I left wanted more M feedback. Overall -- good show. Loved the guest segment. Can you say "Mistro"

Am I going crazy or did somebody else spot the problem with his i8 in some of the shots? Here's a screen grab for those who missed it.

Turbine wheel spokes should point backwards above the centre and forwards below and should certainly match on the same side. In this screen shot it looks like they've taken the front right and put it on the front left so the spokes are the wrong way round?

I'm guessing they damaged the front left somehow, maybe even a puncture, so for the shot they had to swap the tyres over thinking nobody would notice....well I did....where's my prize?

It's your opinion and I respect that but I'm glad Clarkson didn't pull such a comparison at any time throughout the segment. It would have been so easy to say well for $140k why buy a hybrid when you could get a petrol performance car and completely dismiss the purpose of the i8. As far as Top Gear "reviews" go, this was pretty good - there were no real shenanigans and pointless comparisons like you find in other i8 reviews.

Topgears (and clarksons) comments are as believable as its laptimes. Its entertaining (yesterdays episode far better then the idiotic last bar the stupid landrover dam climb) but its all fiction. And for a man that hated bmw so much now praises one (or 2) every episode dont you find that strange? Especially when we all know that bmw, as a sports car manufct is been going downhill since the E60 m5 - on a pure sports car perspective yes quality, comfort weight have all gonne up - and porsche is moving into bmw territory and trouncing bm? When it comes to efficiency the i8 is a "regulatory" car. That is it is engineered to do extremely well on efficiency tests, but comes nowhere close to those results in real world driving. Electric and plug in hybrid cars have a long way to go.

Not really because at the end of the day, it's his opinion. Clarkson never liked the harsh ride that came with BMW's but always admired the way they handled. Clarkson started to praised BMWs more with the FXX chassis because the ride was a lot more compliant but still handled well. Yourself and other forum members might hate that but that's your preference. Just because Clarkson likes the "watered down" BMW doesn't make what he says bulls--t. Remember, this is a guy who has driven/owned various Mercedes so it's no surprise that his preference would be to have a more softer ride.
