Yes it defeats the purpose and eliminates the efforts of weight loss.
But most of all it turns the i8 into a sports car just not the unique progressive sports car it was born to be. The car that has been praised and awarded for its convention defying philosophy.
They just could not wait for the next phase of the i8.
Hahah hinting at something there are you Scott?

Well there's only a month until the anniversary in 2016... Little to no info on any i8 spin offs to date
That was more than a hint.

Exactly! This ole school way of thinking. It's still going to be nice but as I have said I would much rather they kept the electric motors and installed a 6 cyl from the M4 with 425hp. That would have been more special and creative.

I'd like to sell my future kids to make a down payment on this lovely machine. Any takers? I have exceptional genetics so no risk.

This thing is going to drive like a Frankenstein. I don't see how they will make it work with so little room upfront. Fitting it in the rear would have made this a lot sexier.

I'm wondering how many car batteries will have to be placed in the rear to get a 50:50 weight distribution

Really!!!??? I hope you are right. I would love to import one of those to the U.S. one day.

Insignificant. Teslas still get beaten by the i8 - and many other cars - in enough real-world disciplines: curvy roads, trips over 200 miles, acceleration on the other side of 100 mph, build quality, interior design, ... Which is why I didn't get one.

Depends on how garish the wheels are. And what colors they're painted. Also, it needs to be slammed. It doesn't make any difference about ground clearance in pot hole country, it's gotta be slammed. Always. It should be able to scrape the frost off the ground.

You are absolutely misinformed. Go watch the comparison vids on YouTube. Tesla model S p85+ wiped the floor with the i8 in almost every category, what are you talking about???

I just wonder if - besides simply being a fun project - this will actually work well in practice.

The i8 was not conceived with a heavy engine in the front. Putting it there, and with a rear wheel drive plus the gigantic torque of the M5 engine, will be difficult if not impossible to set up properly. Meaning lots of understeer going into a curve, Jaguar F-Type oversteer going out of it.

The optimal setup for a sportscar is the mid-engine configuration, for many reasons. Plus using one of those sequential gearboxes - these are fine for race cars where every kilogram counts, but for current-day sportscars this is just inadequate.

I would also be really surprised if they really got Alpina to help them with engine development. From what I know Alpina does not do this at all, and there are enough alternatives anyway if tuning expertise on the S63tu is needed.
