The Cell Phone Thread

We all use them. Many of us are dependent on them. A few of us are addicted to them. Literally a blessing and a curse. The cell phone.

The purpose of this thread is to provide information that may affect us all such as hacks, breeches, battery problems, app problems, accessory problems, etc.

Please post them here as you uncover them as a benefit to the board. This is NOT a thread to flame a manufacturer, OS, etc. that you hate. Please take it elsewhere. I'm an iPhone user and I respect everyone has a choice that works best for them.

To kick us off...this is potentially serious:

I'm not a fan of voice activation features like Alexa or Siri. What bugs me most about Siri is how hard they make it to really disable it. There should be just one setting to disable Siri entirely, but there is not. And anytime you install a new app, you have to go into that app's settings and turn off the Siri stuff.

Same.

My note 4 lasted a LONG time.

There is nothing I need in a new phone.

It seems to me that cell phones will be a thing of the past much earlier than we all think.
So what's the point of discussing them? ))

Always been an LG fan. Really only because that's what I started with, and they have been good to me with every upgrade.

Before that....my Motorola with built in Walkie service was indestructible for a flip-phone.

There are a lot of things with cell phones that can come back to bite you in the ass. My auto insurance company tried to push me into a 10% discount if I installed a tracking app on my phone that recorded my driving habits. I was like, "Fuq that!!" Last thing I need is for them to deny a claim because I was driving 5MPH over the limit or something. Same with some of the heart rate monitors I use. They have the ability to not only show heart rate, but also do a basic EKG function. But the only way to access the EKG data is by uploading the data to their website. That's a bit too much info out there on the web for my liking. I am aware that there is a lot of info I allow to be gathered just so I can take advantage of one app or another. I weigh the cost of allowing that loss of privacy vs the utility of the app itself. Sometimes it isn't worth the cost, sometimes I'm ok with it.

Reading between the lines, it appears that the government still has not found a way to crack Apple's latest iPhone encryption and security:

Something to consider for those who value their privacy.....

I don't know if you have ever met an American millennial, but most of them would sooner give up a leg than their smartphone.....

I meant that there will be something else than a primitive smartphone, more progressive. Perhaps virtual reality or a chip implanted in the eyes, or most likely, right in the brain.

I use the one that goes around the neck. I’m typically needing both hands throughout the workday with frequent phone calls, so I find it easier.

Built in obsolescence - my Note 8, which works fine with no issues, will no longer receive android software updates (last one was this month from my understanding).

No more monthly security updates either - these will now be quarterly.

So, people are all but forced to update to a newer phone to stay current with software and security. Especially when, for example, apps require a certain software version.

Overall there doesn't seem to be a significant difference between a Note 8 and Note 10. That's why people aren't rushing out to buy the newest phone because the "upgrades and new features" just aren't that significant to justify the expense.

You're an alien. You think we believe this BS? You're phone is probably more like this. And in a geosynchronous orbit. And you take you calls on an implant.

This is no different than what happens in the computer world. Microsoft has stopped security updates for various OS'. But there has been some outcry about the Samsung announcing no more updates for the S8 being that it's only 2 generations old.

Here's what I discovered for anyone (which I'd be surprised to see as it seems there are very few of us) using the physical keyboard case/cover for Samsung S8s. I had a situation where the keys I pressed on the keyboard was not registering on the phone as the same characters. I thought there was a problem with the keyboard. After some investigation, it turned out to be a firmware update problem. The interim fix was to get into the developer options to adjust the screen's DPI. The following firmware update resolved what ever issue that initially caused it.

From someone who worked in the cell phone industry for years, I always embraced the change and looked forward to updates in software in technology. I'm to a point now where I only use about 15% of my phones functionality. It seem like each day I'm learning something new that my phone does, that I will never use.

I think, we as a society, have overshot our needs of what we need a phone to do. Make calls, send texts/emails, take photos & have the ability to use said photos for whatever purpose and show me boobs on occasion. Outside of that any other future developments for wireless technology can F*ck right off.
