I honestly can’t think of any new non-hyper/super car that has an adjusted market value (AMV) markup of almost half the price of the car itself. No one in their right mind would buy this.

Who would pay that much over sticker? Well I happen to know one of those people and he is a Silicon Valley guy who has so much money that $75,000 isn’t even pocket change for him. He bought an i8 when they first came out and didn’t care about the mark-up. He liked the car. He bought the car. He got to enjoy it right away. Simple. He has earned the privilege of paying whatever he wants. Some may think it foolish to pay way over MSRP for a car but those that can easily afford it without even blinking don’t spend much time worrying about what others think. Not a bad place to be.

Paying 50% over MSRP for a roadster version of a dated mass production sports (not super/hyper) car is questionable at best. For $245k you can get a basically new Ferrari 488 or Lamborghini Huracan among other things

These lucky souls want and can have the latest, shiniest thing and pay for the privilege. 6 months down the line, they are bored and back in the lambos/fezzas.

Same happened with i8 coupe, but poor old BMW actually took it to be a sustainable market, rather than the fickle, privileged few so doubled production and we all know what happened there.

Let the hysteria die, wait 6 months and bag one for a bargain. BMWs own residuals tell you where the car is heading (again!)

Agreed, the Roadster residuals are terrible - even worse than they were for my Coupe when I purchased it in 2016.

The poor residuals suggest that they will likely flood the market ...again.

One swallow does not make a summer!

Just out of interest I had a look at what our crazy American cousins were listing i8 roadsters at on USA Autotrader.

Seems they are not that crazy after all. Barring one dealer chancing at the silly figure quoted here, there are about a dozen available at or slightly below MSRP!

How about the dealer asking $245,000 for a USED i8 Roadster????

That's what I meant by.... 'one dealer chancing at the silly figure quoted here'

I've got a 1978 beano album and could offer it for sale at £2million. Probably struggle to sell it for more than £1 though

The dealer in the link I posted is different from the dealer in Post #1 of this thread.

The dealer in the Autotrader link reduced the price from $245,000 to $174,900 lol. This is for a USED i8 Roadster with 141 miles!

My dealer here in the UK tells me that it's a 9-10 wk lead time from ordering to delivery for a new factory order which suggests there is little demand at present. I can't see anyone in the UK paying a penny over list let alone $70K+!!!

This is at BMW Coconut Creek. Why am I not surprised? This is the same dealership that was to selling their first coupe at $300k four years ago. They also allegedly sold their first edition M5 at a $80k markup. It's a gimmicky dealership, and every once in a while they trick a fool into overpaying for their cars. Not much to see here.

Sandal BMW Wakefield UK have one for sale at £125,510. Just rang me up about it, so folk not exactly queueing up to buy it at list price.

Also offered me a pre LCI coupe with £21500 dealer contribution and 0% finance. No thanks.

I think we're about to see worse depreciation than even the coupe suffered

Will BMW never learn

For a HALO car on which they reportedly make a loss on every unit, why not deliberately restrict supply?

That's the downside of a car company run by engineers

The upside is of course the excellent engineering

Jesus wept! A very nicely specced car with carbon and laserlights in Donnington grey at £110K

https://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/2...b-b2f104e56136

I thought they'd fall, but not this much, this quick. Surely an error?

If not, then I'm intrigued as to how much I can bag a 6 months old one at Christmas when my current lease ends. Looks like the R8 Spyder I was contemplating is back on the burner

Can OP rename the thread to 'i8 Roadsters selling way UNDER sticker'. lol

That's shocking - I don't think it's an error at all...

In 12 months I think we'll see the roadster in the 70s here in the UK!

I think you may be right. Absolutely crackers, but a bargain for those willing to wait, because the car is a great car!

As Jash said earlier, why not limit supply? Massive oversight by bmw.
