Drove the iX today followed by an X5 45e

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I've owned way too many BMWs (20+) over the years. My latest is a 2021 X5 40i. I also have a Kia EV6 which is my first EV. The EV6 is surprisingly good - better than the Model Y for me.

I've been hesitant to drive the iX. Some early pictures bothered me a bit and I couldn't see how BMW would improve on the X5 50i much less some other EVs.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

The iX is a phenomenal piece of engineering. My favorite BMW that I've driven. The power is obvious, but the overall dynamics of it is amazing. Wonderful open cabin with great seats that added to the experience. Yes, I really liked it

I'm sure others have nitpicked the dumb cupholders. I'm also not a fan of a push button to open the door and some of the dumbing down of the interface to the car. iDrive 8 is new to me, I need more time with it. Also miss the extra cargo space the X5 has.

I drove the X5 45e right after the iX. The 45e is a great SUV but just wasn't close to the iX in handling or suspension. I love the X5, but it felt dated compared to the iX.

My dealer said they will have some iX models for sale soon. They are from people that cancelled their orders. So I may get a shot at one before my order is made in the fall.

Congrats to those who already have an iX. I'm sure the first year teething will be a challenge, but it is an amazing ride.

Thanks for sharing. Coming from a G06 X6, I had the same experience with the driving dynamics as well and that is on the iX 40 without air suspension. Curious if you tested the iX 40 or 50 - i.e with air suspension?

I have a 22 M50i X5 and 22 45e. Just drove the iX a few days ago and my thoughts mirror yours. Getting back into my X5 was like stepping back in time. We致e owned a Tesla Model X and 3 previously as well, the iX blew me away. I値l be replacing my M50i as soon as I can get one delivered.

Yeah the cupholders are the first thing my wife nitpicked. Felt like the designers had to pick whether to put the cupholders or the phone holder at the front of the middle console and went with the techie pick.

The biggest disappoint is the wait to get the car.

The iX feels, rides, and handles like a sports sedan. That is what convinced us to get this car. And we only drove the xDrive 50 and ordered a M60, so expecting the handling to be even better!

My biggest gripe about iX, coming from g05 x5 40i is that compartment capacity is smaller and doesnt have lower hatch opening.

I can fit 3 fullsized golf bags with a medium sized cooler box in my X5 and still be able to close the tailgate cover (up to four bags without cover) without rear seats folded thanks to the deeper, caved sides.

With iX, it looked like I can only put two golfclubs and no space for coolerbox.. that tail light design is just...

Also had some expectation for front trunk as well but it seems that BMW went for marketing/business strategy and intentionally not added it. I bet they'll introduce this as a "feature" down the line..

It's so easy. It's so easy to make a good-looking BMW.

They do that, and 95% of the detractors, including myself, will cease to be.

But they chose not to.

Every new BMW is a *general* improvement upon the previous generation. We don't want to hear "how great it handles for 6,000lbs" or "it's quicker". Those are obvious given the improvements in technology. ICE or anything else, newer is always better mechanically. I don't doubt that the iX is an objectively better *car* than its older X5 counterpart.
But the aesthetics. John. The aesthetics. What is happening?

Totally agree. I just went to my local dealer for a CCA Cars & Coffee & there was an iX there. The vehicle looks fine aside from the front. I agree, I don't care how impressive it is if it's ugly. Impressive technology though!

Something that needs to be more openly discussed is the reality that these vehicles are not available for a very long time. If placing an order now, 12-14 month wait, at a minimum, unless your willing to pay significantly above MSRP.

I am currently driving an M60 after spending a lot of time in the 50 and let me tell you I thought the acceleration was fast on the 50 the M60 blows it away.

Oh wow, really, tell us more, especially keen on what you're seeing for range (efficiency) vs the iX50.

except when you need a charge and there's no chargers available and you just pull in to a gas station and presto you off again

At least if you do pay over MSRP before the wait, the tax credit will be available ... not that such minutiae matters.

It's hard to make an attractive car with a low coefficient of drag of 0.25 CD. Just ask Mercedes and Tesla.

45e looks 100x better; in addition it has the ICE. In Sport mode with sport transmission it definitely makes for a nicer experience and no reliance on complete battery power. Just my .02

I知 not seeing a huge range difference then what is advertised. Also range is so variable with outside influences such as temperature. In ideal situations I have seen over 400 miles of range for the 50.

I was told 6-8 months, though I know it totally depends on your area. For example I'm sure the allocations are both greater and the lines longer in California.

Doesn't matter really because I don't need to replace my car for another 18 months. I'll trade in whenever it gets here.
