Great review. Seems like one of the better EVs on the market and good for somebody who wants a comfortable and predictable car.

However when it comes to "ultimate driving machine," there are other choices that are superior, including the M340, that too at a lower price.

Yeah he pretty much summed it up. When you're comparing it to bmws other options such as a B58 platform car it's a hard up charge for the I4.

The first down-to-earth i4 review, without trying to hype it up as some M3 killer it'll never be.

Great review because unlike most reviewers, they don't talk about how it's built and what goes into it.

But, many of you are missing the point. The i4 is not supposed to be compared to other BMW ICE vehicles. It's being compared to other electric vehicles. Many of us, including myself, can afford any 3/4 series or M3/M4. We have many reasons why we're choosing to go with the i4. It's a change to electric motors and the future of automobiles. There's plenty of threads to debate the differences between ICE vs. electric.

Excellent review. i4 M50 is generating a lot of interest for all the right reasons.

Shame the new dashboard is going to be in the 3 LCI. Removing basic physical controls is so counter intuitive. Makes the recently refreshed X3 a lot more appealing.

That's pretty much my point.
I can buy just about any BMW and definitely any 3,4 or 5M car.

I chose the i4 M50 not as a track car; but my daily driver.

I get blazing performance, handling as good as the E90 with B8 and sport springs that I had (at least on public roads) and I also get carpool lane access.

Is the M3 a better track car? Yes, but it's not a real track car until you put in on a diet and get rid of the rear seats. If you want to call an M3 a track car you better be buying a stripper with no sunroof and most other comfortable amenities.

My E90 was.gping to be my track car unt it got totaled. I also have a Cooper S (2003) that looks like it's going to get upgraded to be my weekend track car.

With the i4, you want to compare it to a 3er or 4er because IMO, you want to see how close it really is to its ICE counterparts. That's the huge draw for me in wanting to get an i4. Take away the fact it's powered by batteries, it's a BMW through and through.. I don't think this gets spoken about enough. I don't care about the M badge, I don't care about instant torque. I get it, it's an EV and that's what sells but BMW is able to package everything and keep its price close to an ICE 3er/4er. Can't say the same about Mercedes/Audi/Porsche right now since they're offering their EVs over $100k.

You're fooling yourself if you think the i4 isn't being cross shopped with BMW ICE vehicles. Of course it is…. And it better be. It would be a huge sales disaster if only people strictly shopping for an EV were considering it!

For me it was absolutely a comparison to an ICE BMW. I never considered another EV. If it wasn't a BMW EV; it was BMW ICE.

BMW and nothing else considered. I test drove a couple of M4's after I put my money down. Then the M50 came in and my mind was truly made up.

It is essentially and electric 3er (well 4er) - a full EV option without any of the weird quirks for someone who doesn't want a Tesla - it will do fine for those who want to go electric and want the BMW badge

I also cross-shopped mainstream available electric vehicles only, no EV vs ICE. I wasn't picky on body style.

Me too.

I test drove and really considered (and liked) the Mach-E, Kia EV6 (loved it honestly, but the lease payment is stupid!), Mercedes EQS (amazing drive, maddening tech...took 15 mins to figure how to turn Sirius/XM on, hideous styling), the BMW iX (amazing drive, felt like a big i3, unique interior, but the front grille was too prominent for me), Tesla Model 3 (fast, great tech, good range, horrible build quality and shockingly rough ride).

The i4 was love at first sight and drive. I test drove the i4 M50 and was doing paperwork in 15 mins. To me, it is THAT good!!!!

Based on these reviews, maybe I should lease my car instead of financing this. Although, if Im paying $1100 /month for 3 yrs, thats close to $40K I pay in 3 yrs plus added cost upfront on the lease which might come up to 45K. I guess the drop in value might be the same if you finance or lease this car...either way, you are gonna lose money

So why not drop $40k on a car that you can drive for those 3 years, that actually goes up in value?

That's what I do. The hell with 40% depreciation, of a 2022 EV, over 3 years. If I pick the right one, I'll gain 40% if the value, not lose 40% of a new cars cost. Damn. Crazy.

Give me a mint, low option, maint record E36/46/90 ///M car and I'm good for 3yrs, and will make money on the $40k. Turn around in 3yrs and do it again. Better driving experience. Don't try the warranty argument, I wrench, and will handle anything that comes up. 😉

A car is a mobile depreciating asset.
This is the rule, not the exception.
There are special cases times when this is not true.

...and god forbid you have a bad accident that results in a lot of body work, but the car is not declared a total loss, if you bought the car you now will no longer have a clean title and Carfax can have a report of the accident and work done.

If you lease, at the end...you just turn the car back in and the bank holding the lease is stuck with the damaged car.

We have gone thru at least 50+ cars in the last 20 years, and two times we bought. Never again! Also, with leasing you are not paying all the tax up front! Of course if you KNOW you are going to keep the car a long time and you don't care about an accident on the title, then buy!

1000% techwhiz!!! This past year is only the 2nd time in over 25 years of us buying/selling/trading cars where we have had multiple vehicles with equity.

Everyone should plan on every car depreciating, and never count on making money. While it can happen, it is beyond out of any kind of norm!
