To M50 or to edrive40

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Dealer called me saying someone dropped their order for an M50 with delivery end of July and I'm seriously thinking about trading in my 330e as the trade in prices are way better than the usual and I have only 14k kms on it anyway.
Originally I planned to trade/sell my 330e next year and get an edrive40 but given the current parts shortage the m50s are over one year wait time anyway.
I have only driven the edrive40 and that seemed plenty powerful for me so I am looking for some real life feedback from the M50 owners on how it drives, is it too much, what's the real life range on it due to the 2 motors etc.
I only have 1 or 2 days to make up my mind so any quick responses are appreciated.
This is the spec:

Honestly it's a pretty cool build. The only reason to consider an e40 would be for more range. If you live in a city and have a gas car for road trips etc that might not matter at all and I would go m50. If range is important to you I would hold out for an e40 with 18's however..... Your could be waiting a really really long time. A bird in the hand..... But either way you have the 330 and if you can wait you may have hands free tailgate and passenger lumbar support

Go for it. Looks like a solid build with the essentials. Unless you really desparately need a bit longer range or totally dislike the Tanzanite color.

And I forgot to mention since covid been wfh pretty much 100% of the time so this would absolutely be a want vs a need.
Also I have a pretty sweet solar PV system installed which means about 8 months it would cost me close to nothing to charge the car anyway so the reduced range wouldn't really be a factor at this time.
My main wonder is if in comfort mode or whatever the normal mode is, it still bangs your head against the headrest all the time due to the 2nd motor?

I got my car on Friday, but it is now with the detailer for a couple of days. Coming from ICE car I have to unlearn old habits - like first rev the rounds up and expect delay when pressing the gas pedal. With M50 sport mode those ICE habits don’t work that well in daily driving. Torque and response to gas especially in Sport mode is instant. Comfort and Eco pro modes fit much better in relaxed driving. I see myself using them mostly in daily driving, leaving Sport mode for lets go crazy and have fun driving.

There's nothing to worry about. Even with two motors, you'd have no idea all that power's there unless you floor it. It's a pussycat driving around town. That's in the default comfort mode, not eco pro.

Thanks, I was thinking that would be the case but all the dealers around are so lame, they said they will never register an m50 for test driving since they just can't get them so no chance at driving one unless you buy it.

I got my i4 M50 on 16 April 2022. I drive 90% in Comfort, 10% in Eco Pro. Sport mode, especially Sport Boost is insanely fast and makes me nauseous being honest.

In Comfort or Eco Pro it feels like a "normal" car, but if needed the power is there when you press the go pedal!

Range has been PHENOMENAL in my M50. 270-300 miles for EVERY charge! I could not be happier.

The options on this car you could get are awesome, and if you like Tanzanite Blue....get it. I got Portimao Blue and I am obsessed with it. I was going to get Tanzanite, but two dealers told me it is gorgeous, but really a lot of maintenance. But, in all honestly unless you get light gray metallic or some gross beige colour....every car colour requires care and cleaning.

My advice....RUN AND GET THIS CAR NOW!!!!

I was always a black on black sort of guy, maximum carbon black and well not sure anything needs more cleaning than black in a rainy country anyway.
deutsch100 surprised you are getting such high range I would expect that from edrive40 not for the m50 but then again it's never cold in CA is it?

I will see what happens to range Dec-Feb. Our daytimes are warm-ish in the winter, but So. California mornings, it is not uncommon with 32-40F...so I expect to have a range hit. But, still....I am over the moon happy with M50 range and battery management and real time range recalculation and battery regen via braking.

Interesting.

My dealer got an M50 for test driving first.

SD, long time no chat!

Don’t be worried over the dual motor as you won’t know the difference between that and a single motor other than the performance and it’s will feel more planted to the ground.

I’ve had single motor and dual motor teslas and the dual motors are more controlled fun if you get me. Think Audi Quattro V M5 RWD. Both as fast as each other but the Quattro feels a little more planted and less wild!

What is your PV set up? Do you generate enough excess to charge the car?

7kwh, should be plenty I always end up exporting even with 20kwh batteries.

Go for it

Got my car a week ago. Same rims but in Dravit Grey. Absolutely love this ride. Lots of boost in sport mode, but a solid cruiser in comfort. Does not feel OP when u drive it normal - but huge kick when u wanna brag. The "test car" here was in Tanzanite, and it looks good aswell. No reason so far to doubt the 500km range - and that is enuff for my use. I dropped the 20" tho due to range.

Don't miss out on this one
