PDC randomness

I don't think this is unique to the i4 (as it happens sometimes with our Taycan and Defender)...but I'd love to know why or how Park Distance Control and 360 cameras choose to operate

50% of the time when pulling into my garage, the i4 cameras and PDC activate when I am almost in the garage parked, so I know exactly where to stop.

40% of the time PDC and cameras activate the moment my car begins to pull in the garage.

10% of the time...no PDC or cameras.

It's probably how close you are to the garage door frame. An inch one way or the other probably makes the difference.

I've had cameras and PDC on a lot of bmws and never experienced what you're referencing. Both PDC and reverse cameras are typically triggered by the gear shifter going into reverse. Not sure how the EV triggers it. Probably similar concept, but since it's not a typical transmission with gears maybe it's controlled some other way.

Every car I have owned with a reverse camera (including the i4 and all other BMWs)...the rear camera comes on instantly when putting the car in R.

I am talking about when pulling in my garage at home. The cameras and PDC activate at different positions and about 1x a week...not at all. In Reverse, it is automatic and always.

PDC/360 cameras can activate anywhere the car senses a potential collision be it forward or backward. The standard rear cross traffic collision only activates when going in reverse.

As for the OP question, if your garage opening is narrow, the distance from the side to the mirrors might be the reason something triggers the PDC or if something is left in the garage thats close to the car when its pulling in, it might activate. Sometimes, they come on too early even though u know u rnt to hit them and they r far from its path.

As much as I love the PDC, it drive me nuts when you are driving while snowing and the snow covers one of the sensor on the front bumper and it triggers it constantly. One time I was stuck in stop and go traffic for almost an hr and I had to constantly mute the alarm everytime I braked and finally I pulled over and wiped the snow of it as I couldnt take it anymore

Have you set the location up as an activation point?

Hmmm, interesting. I have not done this, nor did I even know this is an option or feature. Thanks. I guess RTFM applies to this
