I stopped by my dealership - BMW of Devon, PA - this morning to look at their demo car. Could not do a test drive so just sat in it and played around with the controls. They received a white iX, standard Shadowline design, 22" wheels (Pirelli P Zero tires), Harman Kardon sound, convenience package, radiant heat and oyster interior. The sensatec is a lot better than it used to be. I was disappointed at how ordinary the Harman Kardon was, nothing you couldn't find in a Honda or Toyota. The bass was hollow and lacked punch even after making adjustments, while the treble was thin. The CA said the Bowers & Wilkins system he heard in his training session was amazing, I had not optioned it in my build but may reconsider now.

Test drove the iX50 today, put a lot smiles on my face, it is such an exciting ultimate driving “EV” to drive in comparing to my Tesla model X.
It has much better ride quality and much quieter too. “Solid” is probably the word I would use about iX50’s driving characteristic. The acceleration however does not feel as fast as Tesla. The iconic sound I thought I would turn it off immediately, but the more I drive, the more I like it to be remained on. The iDrive is much more complicate than Tesla and of course the center screen is much smaller too; and I did not bother digging into all the menus/sub-menus. The HUD is huge in comparing to the 5series I own. The most disappointing parts comparing to Tesla are 1. significantly less storage space, 2. lack of tow hitch (considering its price is close to $100K) . My wife and I just returned from our test drive. The car has a presents that you don't pick up one in photos and videos. It sits lower than our X7 by at least 2 inches so it was easy to get in and out of. The seating position behind the steering wheel is very roomy and noticeably less constrain compared to our X7 which has a large center console. The center arm piece for the iX is located in a nice position I do however have reservations about the cupholders being down underneath. I really didn't notice the shape of the steering wheel once I started driving the car. My wife liked the steering wheel and said it was comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised by how large the HUD appears. Much wider than I'm used to and easier to read. Truly an impressive HUD system. We entered in a route to see how well the HUD looked and also to see the live forward view with the augmented arrows, this is also very impressive. The ride is very smooth and quiet as many have stated the thing I notice first was how much it behaved and handled like an ICE vehicle. The cargo area did look a bit small but it would work fine for my needs. I do wonder if larger families can make this area work. Rear seat headroom and leg room are very comfortable and the seats feel great. When you open a door the window lowers about an inch and when you close the door they go back up. There is a small lip at the roofline to protect water from getting in. The salesman said they've been doing this on their convertibles for a while, nonetheless impressive. Overall my wife and I were impressed and are confident it's the right EV for us.

They made it more annoying to release the hood than in gas cars, don't provide anything to keep it propped up and made it flimsy enough that if you are not careful, you can damage the A pillar's paint when trying to close it.
In his post I have an iX for 24 hours - Ask me anything AMA, hugo_nz took a great pic of what is under the hood Basically BMW does not want customers to open the hood, but you can still do it. |

BMW made a sound decision to push these demos out to their dealers to build interest in the iX and i4. Bottom line, if your local dealership has an iX or i4 they will most likely allow a test drive right away. And you should see it in person and drive it before making a judgement.

My advisor called me this morning to look over my M50 paperwork. Told me to come in and drive the iX.

I have yet to see a single review or article where they actually asked that question to BMW to get an official answer. If it is one of the "good" reasons, then I would agree with their choice.... If not, it would have been nice to have a good automatic opening/closing frunk. Without this, i.e. if it were like opening the hood, most people will end up not using it often. |

Having owned a slew of BMW V8s I was surprised with how small the “engine” bay is on the iX relative to its size. But yes, give me better HVAC and system cooling over a frunk any day.

At least the i3 frunk is use-able for drink cooler.

I've been buying cars for 40 years and not one of the many cars I've owned ever had a "frunk". I'm certain my wife I will survive without a "frunk".

I mentioned this in another post. The biggest drawback to a frunk is the inconvenience factor. I never use the frunk in the e-tron because it’s accessed by popping the hood the old-school way. Maybe if it offered easier access from outside the car I’d use it more but as it stands I basically don’t even care that it’s there.
