A new owner with a question

Hi all, just picked up a new i8 this afternoon. When I came home to charge the car, I noticed that the charging stops when I lock the doors (while charging plug still plugged into the car). Is this correct and if so is there any way to get the charging going even when I lock the doors? Also, how long does it take to 100% fully charge from empty battery state using standard charge/fast charge? Thank you.

Charging should not stop. It never has on mine.

It takes about 90 minutes to charge fully using my 32A (UK) supply. I have never timed it exactly though, and it might be a bit quicker.

Congratulations on your new toy!

Wow! You were able to pop the hood! They say it normally requires two BMW technicians to perform that task in order to avoid damaging the panel.

The charging of the i8 should remain unaffected whether it's in locked or unlocked mode.

I have noticed the same issue. Plugged it up and notice it isn't fully charged the next day. Only thing I could think of was that I locked the car.I figured it would charge locked or unlocked.

I am letting it charge again and keeping an eye on it. Might just call the dealer to ask. Keep us posted on what you find.

Locking the car during charging will allow the car to continue to be charged but will lock the charging port so the plug can't be removed. I assume this is for public operation so that someone can't just unplug your charging cord and use it themselves.

I noticed that. You can't unplug it when locked. Wonder if there is a setting that needs to be changed or updated.

Carac. Thanks for that.

Amazing. Not going to bother though. I noticed the xtra 12v socket where the hood latches are

How do you get into the 3 cylinder??

Thanks guys. I didn't open the hood. It was done at the dealer when they were installing Escort 9500ci. 😀

When the charge stops (no light nor sound emitted from the car's charge port), have either you or ericdad looked at the BMW portable charge unit to see which light illuminates? If it shows "power fault", then it could be an overload on that particular electrical garage outlet which then triggered your home's circuit breaker. This happened to me. It turns out the charging outlet I used is connected to the same fuse utilized by my home's air conditioning system (AC). So whenever the AC kicks in, it trips the circuit breaker which cuts off power to the outlet that charges my car. If however the light on the portable charger shows "charging fault," then I would suggest having the car as well as the portable charger cable checked out by your BMW service advisor.

For some reason the charging point has a temperament. I have managed to have the port unlocked even when charging in a public port and doors closed. If you unlock the car when charging it sometimes stops the charging. I have not yet 100% understood when it does what, but it is caused by keyless go. Thats why most members dont know what you are talking about. It is blue when it is charging and green when full. Otherwise not charging.

Haven't had the chance to charge the batteries when they're in a fully depleted state. Usually have between 12-13 remaining e-miles when I perform the recharge. On average, it has taken 1.5 hr to obtain 7-8 e-miles using the 110v outlet.

I also see a precipitous drop in e-miles on occasions when I start off driving with the AC on.

Do you ever precondition before you leave?

Definitely reduces the load on battery on initial heating/cooling, which is a hit. It uses shore power to get car interior to temp instead of battery.

And supposedly if you set departure time with preconditioning three hours ahead it will even use shore power to adjust temp of battery pack for optimal range. At least on i3 so we can assume also on i8.

Definitely makes sense to not place an unnecessary load on the batteries prior to departure by either preheating or pre-cooling the vehicle with shore power. Will try preconditioning the vehicle before my next trip to get the optimal range out of the battery pack as well. Thanks for the info.!

Awesome video. The i8 is like a sophisticated, interesting and technical woman. If you push too hard she will break. LOL
