Electric speaker fitted.

Hi. I ordered my i8 with the speaker to generate a noise with the understanding I could turn it off if I wished.

Seems this is not the case...

Or does somebody know different

I believe it is always on when below a certain speed and in electric drive if you have it, but I'm not sure. I never found a setting in the iDrive.

I did this too as it will be mandatory in 2019, but the brochure specifically said IT CAN BE TURNED OFF!!! It shouldbe on as default. There is no idrive menu?

Page 65 in the owners manual:

Acoustic pedestrian protection
Depending on the country-specific version, the
system generates a continuous driving noise
during electric driving up to approx.
20 mph/30 km/h.
A speaker system broadcasts the noise to the
surroundings.
As a result, other traffic participants, e.g. pedestrians
or cyclists, can better perceive the
vehicle.
Switching on/off
Depending on the country-specific version, the
system is automatically active after every driving-
off or the system can be set on the Control
Display.
1. "Settings"
2. "Pedestr. Protection"
3. "Activate"

Kip, won't that deactivate other pedestrian protection features too? e.g. the sonic/camera (not sure of technology used) system?

My problem is, I can toggle it on and off all day long. Even with the windows down and driving along a wall, I can't tell the difference from inside the car. Has anyone ever actually heard that noise?

Sorry, missed your post and was on a longer trip. This only turns the sound off. Protective systems are under the button with a miniature car with a green circle around it on the dash board. If it is green, all protection systems are on.

That's good to know

Although I did not opt for a speaker anyway....as I wanted my i8 to have a "stealth mode" for creeping up on pedestrians

Stealth Mode can also be used for hunting small furry animals. Just saying.

I own no garage queens. If it's in my driveway, it's been ridden hard and put away wet. ...and now, with a light crust of Maine road salt.
