People thought they'd back away from bigger grilles when they first started showing up, but they haven't and turns out they are growing on people.

Then there are the even newer models that show no signs of going backward to some "traditional" X design, if you can even call any particular generation traditional.
The iX kind of is an experiment - BMW has said the platform is a one-off and isn't the same as CLAR or the forthcoming Neue Klasse replacement.

The lack of a number in the model name says to me it's a one-off, I can't see them creating a specialised model here. Other posts have shown the iX5 will exist on the future, in 4 or 5 years time.

So yes, it's an experiment - no doubt some elements/learnings/choices will be carried forward and others not.

Thankfully, my current PCP on the X5 ends in a few years so I don't need to decide now what to get to replace it.

If you've got an iX and love it, fair play. I have driven one, wasn't impressed and would consider it a downgrade overall from my current X5 (leaving aside the method of propulsion).

I like the i7 a lot. BMW has made subjective designs for a while. One man's trash.....

I see some folks in here that drive an X6 telling me the ix is trash. Respect their opinion, it's theirs. That's why I don't share my own on the x6 - cause the next man shouldn't gaf about me.

But anyhow, I like that at least these opinions are in a thread comparing these two vehicles side by side. It's really unproductive in threads that have nothing to do with subjective takes on design, which is where this kind of stuff occurs most of the time.

Agree - BMW keep selling a ton of cars, so some people must like it. I respect that, but just not what I used to love about BMWs.

Oh I agree it's a one-off in terms of model. I'm just saying, if you think the styling is how it is because it is an "experiment", I'm not so sure.

The carry forwards you mention are precisely what I mean. One just has to look at the i3, i8, i7 to know that they're going to keep producing bold designs. The one exception is the i4, being a retrofit, but even that has the giant top to bottom grille.

It's a prediction, and it could be wrong, but I think people waiting for an iX5 because they think it will look like their g05 and won't have a big "interesting" grille or sleek thin taillights or whatever might be disappointed.

Of course with style being subjective, it could have all of those things, look nearly identical to the iX and some might decide they like it more just because there is something subtle. I mean, people are comparing it to the X1 and a minivan so who the hell knows how people come to conclusions. some people even get attached to a specific model and will only buy that… Maybe it just needed a number in the badge to look good!

Yep. I'm not sure if we are more in need of design engineers or optometrists...

Would also add X5 with those rims vs ix with 21s not Apples to Apples. I personally don't like this ix trim in the flesh (phytonic w/21s)

All good points.

We do know however that that i7, X7 and XM front look will NOT be carried down to lower models. BMW has already said this as those models will have a different, premium exterior.

As with all things, it could change but that is currently their strategy.

The X5 is so ugly! It looks like a distorted Lexus SUV.

Judging by the post above, the latter

I agree. I looked at the iX and ended up w a 45e. The interior is fantastic but the front dimensions in my opinion on the iX looks to rounded and the grill is way to vertically long. Nothing wrong w Nissan, but it looks like BMW stole the design from the Nissan Kicks compact SUV and threw an electric engine w BMW badge on it. I can’t see this first iteration of the iX style sticking around to long before they make some drastic styling changes.
