Anyone else hiding from the Olympics?

I absolutely love the Olympics. The skill/strength/etc of all those athletes across so many different disciplines... It's mind-blowing to watch.

But. Every time I watch any of it, even just a 5 min summary, it leaves me feeling horrible. Especially if it's gymnastics or something like that. I just feel like the most pathetic waste of oxygen on the planet.

So I avoid watching, even though I basically love watching. Anyone else get that?

Do you have any guesses why it makes you feel horrible?

Envy, I suppose, is what it boils down to. Envy of their ability to train for a lifetime to do their thing, and then execute on the day. I can't even motivate myself to go and mess about on my mountain bike half the time, and I enjoy doing that!

I'm pretty insecure, but watching athletes do their thing doesn't move me one bit as I've never had any interest in being a professional athlete and I don't care about the Olympics one bit.

Just stick to what you like to do, pushing yourself to go MTBing will make you feel less lazy in an instant.

Before any event, I wish they would have a regular Joe/Joan try to perform it, that way we can see how impressive it really is when a pro does it.

For the first time, I heave heard many athletes tell about how unrewarding that life is and they are retiring after the Olympics. I was blown away to hear some of the interviews.
Very few of these athletes with the exception of MAYBE Gymnasts opening their own studio can really go on to do related careers for life.

I don't care at all about the Olympics. Based on what little reports I have seen on the news, seems the participants are more whiney this season.

Its hard to watch people that hate the country they represent. Shouldn't be on the team if they think being in the Olympics is oppression not opportunity.

I've never been into the olympics or sports watching in general. I just don't see the appeal in it other than the feeling that you are part of a group like team USA or whatever team your a fan of in other sports (even though you really had 0% to do with the team winning or losing and in the case of sports most of the people in that team aren't even from your state or what not).

Personally I just don't care about someone running around in a circle or jumping up and down. Watching a bunch of grown men get paid millions of dollars to throw a ball around just doesn't appeal to me. Maybe it's BECAUSE they are so good that I don't care. Maybe it's like American Idol. I have never watched a single episode... but I LOVE watching all the reject clips on youtube. Maybe if they had some fat guy trying to do a pole vault I would watch.

The fact that a fart thread is going on 2 pages shows the interest people have for the olympics on a car forum.

The other thread is at 9 pages though....although I personally don't give a shit about the Olympics. the great thing about modern day technology is now that we have other means of watching TV, I'm not forced to watch it on every channel. As a kid, every damn channel was the Olympics.

NBC, if their coverage is any indication.

Not really hiding from it. I cut the cord a while ago, so can't really watch live, and I'm not seeking it out, anyway. The headlines I have seen seem mostly about activist athletes--which is fine--they can be activists--in their off season. But it's a huge turn-off during the Olympics. Combined with the year delay, and no spectators, it seems like an afterthought, anyway.

NBC's ratings appear to be tanking compared to last time. I wonder if that's part of the reason why?

should probably work on your self esteem if watching the top 1% of athletes around the world makes you feel bad about yourself.

I think the vast majority just don't care. It does raise a question, if no one is working and no one is watching the Olympics, then what is everyone doing?
