Tesla superchargers for the i4 using Tesla Tap?

I searched the forum and couldn’t find anything on the i4. I saw a thread on the i3 forum, but don’t know if the i4 is different.

Can we use the Tesla Tap to charge the i4 on public Tesla branded chargers?

Not without a Tesla to J1772 adapter in North America. BMW uses the CCS combo charge port, which is different than the Tesla charge port on US-spec Tesla BEVs. The J1772 is the AC portion that is found on public (Level-2 chargers like ChargePoint). Tesla provides a J1772 to Tesla adapter to support public L2 chargers. I think there is a 3rd-party adapter available to go from Tesla L2 to J1772, but I don’t know how good it is.

Tesla has started opening up the SC network in the EU for other brands, which you can use through the Tesla app. It’s somewhat easier in the EU due to the common CCS plug used across all BEV platforms. No idea if/when that will be offered in NA though.

Cheers!

NA markets should be using the CCS plug ( DC fast charge ) as well in addition to the J1772 AC plug.

Correct, but Tesla doesn’t use CCS in the US/CA… the Supercharging network is proprietary and won’t allow 3rd party vehicle charging until two things happen… 1) Tesla provides an adapter to go between Tesla SC and CCS. 2) Tesla adds charger activation from the app so 3rd party BEVs can charge and the customer can pay.

The same applies to Level 2 AC Tesla chargers… a Tesla to J1772 is needed, which is available I believe, but I don’t know the cost or speed.

Elon has stated that both should be happening soon.
Non-Tesla owners will be allowed to sign up with the Tesla App.

This is happening at a few locations in Norway as a trial now. I really hope this moves onto the UK before I receive my car. The more charging options the better…

Do you know of these Superchargers have dedicated CCS connections or do they have to buy an adapter?

https://electricrevs.com/2018/11/14/...-does-it-mean/

Looks like Tesla adopted CCS in Europe back in 2018. I doubt an adapter is needed…

I wouldn't hold your breath on the US getting it anytime soon. That said, I just got an update to my car that enabled the Tesla CCS adapter to use native CCS DCFC stations.... so progress. Tesla just needs to develop and offer an adapter to go from Tesla to CCS in NA..... hopefully it's available in the next year.

me too!

Although Fl has a good amount of charging stations, they need more DC fast charging stations as opposed to Level 2's. EA and EVGo offer some, but not the same level as Tesla's stations.

side note, Although I'm happy that BMW offers something to entice a new EV owner, their $100 EVgo gas credit isn't as good as VW-groups free 3 year unlimited charging with EA stations...

Found on the i4 overview page. They might be coming out with a new program to replace the $100 EVgo credit? One can hope

Given what a sh*t show the EA network currently is, I wouldn’t be so sure about that…

Stop changing the title!

Mods, stop changing the title to my thread. Tesla superchargers cannot be used with L2 chargers. That wasn't my question.

as charging stations go, seems like EVgo has some catching up to do with EA on my side of FL unfortunately. EA and Superchargers seem to be more prominent, and are fortunately pretty decent options for DC fast charging (for now), I really hope they open up Superchargers soon.

EA’s issue isn’t simply locations - it’s that getting them to actually charge when you plug in has been a real crapshoot.

Connection errors, stations that are physically present but have never actually been energized/activated, charger placement that makes access to your car’s charging port difficult or impossible - by all accounts it’s been a mess.

Anyone in North America planning to drive longer distances in a non-Tesla EV is likely to experience all of the above for a while yet, sadly.

True, there is that side of EA with it's inconsistent performance.

My home outlet is 240v 60amp, I hope I can get the full 11kw charge speed on a level 2 at home. Hopefully BMW's included system is okay...

I just saw this video on Youtube where it looks like the UK is opening about 15 Tesla Supercharger locations that have a separate CCS charging cable to charge non-Tesla's. Has anyone seen any of that in States yet?

My question is what's in it for Tesla? Unless, the gov't is funding Elon to do this.

It's part of the 2021 US infrastructure bill for 7.5 billion in funding. Elon wants some of those dollars

https://electrek.co/2021/08/03/tesla...unding-us/amp/

I remember a few people on the forum were saying this won't happen anytime soon, I'm sure they will be surprised when they'll see other EV's at their supercharging stations later this year

As soon as this hits in a few months, the whole "Tesla has the supercharging network advantage" will go away fast.
