Yeah the M's are not supposed to be where they are at the moment. Here's an interesting snippet of data. Mind you they haven't seen the playoffs for 20 years!

--------

This is what distinguishes the Mariners: They have been outlandishly good at hitting when the moment is biggest. Overall, Seattle’s offense is a lowly 26th in OPS this season, batting a collective .226/.302/.386 for a .688 mark. Even adjusting for park, their output ranks just 20th. But in high-leverage situations (broadly, moments where the outcome of the game is most up for deciding), the 2021 Mariners morph into the league’s best lineup. In these key situations, which often entail facing the best pitchers the other team has to offer, they have an MLB-leading .833 OPS.

Over and over again, baseball researchers have failed to find any true skill or repeatability in players or teams who step up their games in decisive at-bats — the phenomenon is often fleeting, or clustered by happenstance. But given the choice of how to spread out a limited amount of possible production, this is how you’d do it!

This degree of clutch performance — which compares how they play in big moments to their own norms — is unprecedented. They hit like Cesar Hernandez as a whole, but like Jose Altuve when it matters most. By Baseball-Reference’s calculations, the Mariners are on pace to be the most clutch lineup of all-time.

The exact opposite effect has hit the Red Sox since the ASB. They have no clutch hitters.

F the Mariners! Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps was the steal of the century for them. Buhner, Griffey, The Big Unit, Dave Fleming, Edgar, Norm Charlton, A-Rod, Itchy, King Felix, Jamie Moyer did win them multiple WS titles, thus, I’m a jelly Yankee fan.

BTW, I can’t name one player on the Mariners.

Lowe owns the Yankees pitchers today. 3 dingers in one game. Damn.

Yankees aren’t going anywhere. They can’t even beat the Rays and there are plenty of teams who made the playoffs that are way better than the Rays. I know it’s about matchups but jeez, the Yankees fold against Tampa. Gone are the days when the Rays were easy wins. Well not anymore. George must be rolling in his grave.

What a mess the AL WC race could be. Sox and Yanks could keep it clean if they both win tomorrow.

I think that idiot closer for the Mariners just blew any chance they had to make the playoffs. Sigh. He comes into the 8th inning and walks the first two batters and then throws a strike down the middle of the plate and gives up a huge HR to the 3rd batter. Piece of s***. They were up 3-1 before that and now losing 4-3. I knew it was too good to be true.

Mariners win. Still on course to be messy if either the Sox or the Yanks lose (or if both lose).

At this point, Yankees should lose. For some reason, they’re afraid of the Rays and clearly they play tight against them.

Yeah I was really surprised as I thought they were done after their closer screwed up.

Don't the Rays have the best record in the league?

Rays are best in AL.

Giants and Dodgers have more W's than Rays and the Dodgers are in second place in their league behind the Giants lol. No other team in the AL has over 100 wins.

Sox look like they can't wait to hit the golf course next week. Sale crapped out after 2 innings and the batters look like fools against the Nats' minor league pitcher. This is not October caliber baseball.

Yanks win a close game, so they're in.

So Yanks at Boston? Not really confident at all because even if the Yankees beat the Red Sox, I don’t see them playing well against the Rays.

I’m sure Sale will make a bullpen appearance but Cole has been spotty as of late as well.

Sale sucked today. Hopefully he gets his head straight if he's needed Tuesday. I think Eovaldi will start.
