That and large capacity drop tanks, with a new engine made this plane the epitome of fighter production until the ME 262 came along.

Little known fact: the highest scoring us squadron in Europe in WW2 preferred the P-47.

The body was so big for the super turbo charger tubing. With the paddle blade propeller, it actually had a good rate of climb. And probably the best diving fighter of any Air Force, coupled with the 8 50calibers. Very hard-hitting.
