Just spoke to the so called BMW Genius here in the UK. Apparently they have had a few calls on the issue starting today by mine stopped working on the 25/06/23 @16.05. They are working on it is what I was told and no ETA on resolution - I did mention that I need to be compensated for the inconvenience - which is unlikely!

That is likely to be the near field communication that triggers that. Having said that, I didn’t get that when I put the car on charge last night

Have to try - maybe haggle the remote parking for free. Mine is 2021 build so just missed out on that when it launched

Also discussed the rollout of iDrive 8.5 - again not compatible with my HU. How in this world can they think of software upgrade without it being reverse compatible is baffling. Can you imaging Apple or Samsung doing that - I am comparing premium products here for a reason as BMW falls in that category in my books at least

The existing head units that we all have are barely compatible with iDrive 8. The newer headunits began with vehicles in production after March of this year. There’s already a third headunit that will be added to the vehicle’s after November of this year.

BMW (and others including VAG/EA, etc.) have a lot to learn about offering and managing cloud based services. They use platforms like Azure and AWS (and others) but that doesn't mean they're adept at running those services and BMW is probably one of the better companies out there since they've been doing this for quite a long time. And before someone says "but tesl..." they're not that much better at it either. Audi just cleaned house recently because of the problems with the mess that is MMI. We're going to see more churn in this industry until someone realizes that there is untapped potential here but it cannot operate in the same 2-6 year release cycle that car companies have traditionally followed. The waterfall model is dead and people have different expectations with services even if they are 'sticky' like a car.

This could be a simple as one firewall rule gone wrong. I see this every single day at work.

If an errant firewall rule causes a multi-day outage then I rest my case.

I could tell you some stories about our operations team (our awful new, outsourced support model) and their lack of ability to manage firewall rules appropriately. (Cough cough Accenture). I’ve seen them add allow rules at the very bottom below the block rules and wonder why their internal customer is complaining. Total ignorance!

And from my corporate IT experience, and my previous employment with another vehicle manufacturer with two letters in the company name…. Most app owners don’t have a clue how their applications actually work. my best guess is this is an outage due to some sort of migration or “upgrade.” I’m quite confident this was 100% human error.

I also sent an email to the BMW connected drive team to try and get an expected fix date.

'nuff said.

I've held several multi year contracts with those guys and take your pick from their competitors. They're nothing more than ITIL jockeys that take on managed services from companies that see "IT" as not being core to their business. They'll manage to watermelon powerpoint charts and fight to renew the contract. They view their work as transactional without interest in outcomes. This is not how to run cloud scale services but it works for running back office operations that are not critical, or at least have manageable impact, to running a business.

After working with these jokers for about two years, not to mention having to support them even though they’re supposed to be supporting us, they are very good at two things:

(1) billing
(2) deflection

I just received a note from BMW USA as well and I can now see my current status in the app.
