Ap - ugly
patek - i am not 90 thanks
vacheron - far too niche
panerai - looks like a $5 watch

Rolex - always a safe and classy choice
90 year olds wear patek? I guess it would take me to 90 to save to buy one, haha.

With social media, things are in your front more than ever! spend an hour on Instagram and you'd think that 90% of the population has a $5k+ watch. 70% of the population drives an $80k+ car and 99% of the population travel to some tropical destination every year. Oh yeah, everyone bench 300 lbs and is ripped like a body builder too.

But ultimately I have to let Rolex go because I'm just not a luxury guy - I like hardcore/cool stuff, not luxe-cool stuff.

So, yeah, you CAN wear a Rolex, but it's the dumber choice now, which is sad.

You bring up some good points. I feel fancy watches are more luxury items now. I saw a guy in the jacuzzi recently wearing his two tone Rolex and was shocked that he was wearing it in water. Yikes! Where did this brainwashing come from?

In my inner circle, I don't have any friends who are really watch people.

I'm a bit of a mold breaker in that I love an own higher end watches (AP, JLC, Patek, (IWC & Panerai are same level as Rolex) etc)....

....but I also love my Rolexes. Most high end collectors that I know (and watch dealers) tend to frown upon Rolex as being too common, unoriginal, less expensive, etc.

Currently I'm rocking a Batman and a Hulk, along with a YG DD40. The steel versions get more attention, and I tend to wear them everywhere and on all occassions (water, snow, sand).... and when I checked recent prices both are through the roof!!

You can't even get an older Pepsi for under $8k anymore.

Wear what you love, and love what you wear. Don't worry about anyone else.

Sorry Patek is a step above all else. Not an old man's watch either, unless you are simply a casual watch guy knowing a few name brands.

I'd argue a lange and sohne is at least on par with patek.

argue all you want.

Vacheron is closer to Patek than A Lange Sohne

Patek and Rolex are at a league of their own. Patek especially.

That's laughable rolex is mid pack at best. No where on level of watchmaking as a lange and sohne. I'm talking about actual watchmaking not resting on what you did 100 years ago and people paying for a name.

El Oh El

VC closer to patek than ALS...

Patek and ALS are in the top tier of watches. Majority handmade, multi complication movements in precious metal cases that arent mass produced.

VC is akin to AP, Rolex, JLC (even though JLC has made and/or makes movements for everyone mentioned in my post) etc.

Rolex are really, in terms of watchmaking and complexity, below those watches as well. If not for their expert marketing and world renowned name, they would not be as sought after as they are. Even in the true watch collector circles, Rolex isnt a staple. If not for their branding, youd talk about Rolex in the same breath as Tudor (their lower tier brand with Rolex engineering and fingerprints all over their watches and movements) and Omega.

I am not talking about complexity of movements. I am talking the brands in general. Everyone in the business will tell you nothing comes close to Patek and Rolex, in that order.

Plenty of complex horology to go around, no one really cares. A Lange, Audemars, Vacheron, Richard Mille, Blancpain to even Nomos and Seiko. It's the perception of brand value that stands out, hence Patek and Rolex are so sought after.

No one will tell you that and you are confused. Maybe you mean hold value then yes. Look at any brand hierarchy chart Rolex is far from top tier. Lots of people care and are actual watch nerds not people looking to make money. Heritage, innovation, longevity, brand recognition, crafmanship and tons of other factors go into making it to a top tier.

Please note... the marketing, branding and history is a HUGGGEEEE part of all of this. While Rolex certainly doesn't have the complex movements or rarity or specialty of AP, Patek, ALS etc etc... it has massive world renown as a luxury item not just a watch. It's recognized above all of the above as a symbol of status. AP probably will not be known outside of the watchworld or by enthusiasts... I could go around ask 10 people and all 10 would know Rolex, maybe 2 would know what AP is... that alone is humongous. The other big names only really have a meaning for enthusiasts and collectors.

While I don't agree with all of your statements, the bolded is spot on... and no one can argue that.

That only has meaning to enthusiasts, collectors and watch experts... the masses will never ever see it that way.

I mean listen, we all could say Alfa makes some great cars, Giulia QV included...yet we all somehow drive M3's.

That's because we are in a BMW forum. Lots of car enthusiasts and they look into all sorts of cars and weigh different things they value. Same goes with anyone who buys multiple watches. If you're a 1 watch person I can see not caring. I have 20ish now and woulsnt consider myself a collector same goes with guns.

Yeah, but most people simply do not have that many watches nor do they care enough... for those people Rolex will always be top... as far as complexity, horology etc etc... I honestly think time (no pun intended) has in many ways surpassed that field as cheap items like the Apple watch are far more reliable, accurate and can do more than tell time. I see all of these watches as a luxury good and the Rolex name rings top in that dept to most of the world.

Yeah it is a luxury item. But craftsmanship still is valued by some. It's why people buy a Ferrari instead of making their civic faster than one still isnt better. I guess I dont feel I'm in that small of a minority but maybe I am.

I know this is a bit OT

But I’m considering selling my 6542 Bakelite GMT. I’ve been off the watch forums for years now. Can anybody give me recommendations on which forum would be most likely to have members with a serious interest in such a watch, and the wherewithal to buy it?
