Saw and sat in an iX today

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I had a call from the store where I have a pre-order in for an iX that a pre-production unit would be there today so I stopped in.

Wow!

The car looks great and the interior is unbelievable. I sat in the rear behind a 5'9" driver and enjoyed limo level space. iDrive 8 is amazing. The car does have an 11kW charger. There is a rear wiper (take that, I-Pace). Like the i8, when you open the doors you see carbon fiber.

The only thing that might be an issue is the relatively small rear cargo area. Oh, and the price.

Pictures weren't allowed.

The car was red with the "black package." The interior was a light colored Sensatec. That last particularly impressed me. The seats are like thrones and deliver proof that this car is intended as a 7 Series level car. The feel of the vinyl was soft and pliant, not at all like you'd expect.

The BMW guy kept repeating that it was the size of the X5, the height of the X6 and the wheelbase of the 7. All I can say is that it has impressive packaging.

Asked how it drives, the BMW guy — who had driven it from NJ to Maine and then to Boston — said it was the best-driving BMW he'd ever driven. He described the power as amazing (no surprise for an EV). He said the handling was "light-heavy". Not sure what that means but he was raving about the car.

Good to hear this! Yes. The interior looks amazing and I am sure iDrive 8 will be amazing.

FWIWI bumped into someone on the iDrive 8 team at an AI conference and that is how I got interested on the iX. Go figure. LOL

What did you think of the massive grill? That is currently my only concern. I (and my wife) prefer a more subdued look. Other than the front grill it looks perfect. The price is competitive for the package.

Everyone wants to talk about the grill. I like it but honestly I think the controversy is overblown. It generates clicks on the automotive websites.

I'm five years people will call the design "attractive" and even "classic". Reference: i3

I said a bit more about the front end here: https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=28025887

Of course you think it is overblown...you like it. But for those of us who are repelled by it...it is ugly now and will be ugly next year and the years after that.

IIRC, I said the controversy is "overblown."

The design discussion makes good ink/clicks for the hordes of auto journalists with nothing else to say — their sniffy attitudes showing through and their college degrees prominent with ever-more-clever hyperbolic descriptions of the design.

A little bit like you being "repulsed" by a shape in plastic.

Don't get me wrong. I like BMW, drive a 530e (although I really want a 545e but BMW won't sell it in the USA) , and think the new IX looks like a great driving vehicle.

My problem is that every time I walk into my garage, I will be looking at that "grill". I just can't do it.

Then it's your loss.
Audi and Lexus have even bigger and uglier grill and they never generated this much hate.

You misunderstand my concern. While I am not a fan of the huge grills on many cars, it is the orientation of the BMW grill that turns me off. It is too tall and fat. Compare this with a MB grill that is horizontal and makes the car look tough.

So...yes...I don't love the Audi and Lexus grills, nor do I intend to buy one, but at least they are wider than they are tall.

BMW fans hating on new BMW grills is nothing new. I still remember the hate that was being spewed at the F30 3 series cause they made the grills touch the headlights... that and the non retractable infotainment screen. The barfing emojis, the "BMW lost its way" comments...Let alone what was being said about the new X5/X7 grills.

He's right, when the X7 was first revealed, there were BMW posters with their hair on fire. Three model years later and you have stand in line to get an X7. It takes time to accept design-language changes from any car manufacturer but if they don't evolve, they eventually lose some customers. The grill on the iX is a bit much but with each passing week and several new video reviews, it's growing on me. There is a lot to like as well.
