why does the i8 aircon always run?

if the fan is on, you don't have the choice of having the AC on or off as in other BMWs. would make more sense to be able to turn it off, to extend electric range.
have had the Roadster a week and coming to grips with the technology.
BMW Australia have had umpteen in storage and this was a
may 2018 build, sold new this month.

If you just want the fan, you can press the a/c button to toggle it on or off.

Interesting. Looks like they've replaced it with a fairly useless "Off" button. Not sure what the rationale for that decision was...

I can tell you, never turned AC off on my life in any car. This for me and everyone I asked around me in a quick poll is a useless function. Compared to heating AC is "cheap" regarding energy. AC off also causes moisture buildup, etc.

Can't say I have either, but given it has been a function on the coupe it does seem odd that BMW have taken it away and just duplicated the function of the fan button in its place.

Even though a/c may be less of a burden than heating on the battery, the OP has a use case for the button to conserve more energy - so at least for him/her it would not be a useless function.

Yes I get that, although it might not be a really noticeable topic. If you go to EcoPro instead of Comfort AC is actually reduced already. Don't want to defend taking it away but reason why most likely a completely neglectable number of owners would care at all. Turning it off might have caused more issues than taking the function away. You are supposed to turn it on e.g. from time to time and some people caused a service incident under warranty keeping it off all winter I guess...
