Agreed! I never got a wall connector for my Tesla... ended up being fine just with a mobile connector at 240V @ 32A. I considered a Juicebox or another J1772 compatible wall charger that would support both my i4 M50 and my wife's iX, but she's not sold on BEV's yet... so will probably just stick with a mobile charger at 40A (NEMA 14-50)

My 2 cents. Having the wallbox is not so much about speed as convenience. In this way you can always leave the portable charger in the car and not be caught home without it, when it's really needed.
The 14-50 receptable is not designed for repeated insertions and will eventually wear out if the plug is not left in. I happen to have a Tesla wall charger installed for my son when he visits. I plan on simply getting a Tesla to J1772 adapter for the i4. Also Tesla now sells a version of their wall charger with a J1772 plug for $500. |

Now I do keep my set of charging cable adapters in the car at all times, because that way I can charge at whatever type of charger might be available. |

Looking towards the future, wouldn't it make more sense if you are needing to have wires installed to look into a 100amp system to cover basis for potential 19.2kw@80amp for upcoming vehicles or potential software updates from BMW?

Many if not most homes could not support an additional 80 amp load. It would be rare a home would be built with that amount of excess capacity.

We are far (100+ feet) from the street so they made it such that they would never need to upgrade the wiring to our two houses.

When I installed my charging box, the electrician had to move everything around to get me a 20 amp dedicated line. So at this time I am limited to a 20 amp circuit. Upgrading to 400 amps is great but digging a long trench in my lawn is not so great. |

You have 225 amp service and the electrician couldn't squeeze out another 28amps to give to 11KW charging? I'm curious what other high wattage appliances you have? Or was the issue no available slots in the panel for the 240 vac breaker?

The 50A L2 product for home looked interesting. Most people will have issues trying to just get 40A into a panel. I had my service entry redone for 200A service a few years ago. I can drop the 50A breaker pair in the aux panel that doesn't get backed up.

Just remember full 48 amps requires a 60 Amp circuit (not a socket). You cannot use a NEMA 14-50 outlet which is technically rated for 40 amps. National Electric Code only allows you to connect a continuous load of 80% of the circuit rating.

The next L2 will be less than 15 feet from the mains.
