So, the i4 M50 Test Drive went well. We had about an hour. Weather was dry, outside temperature 2.5 to 4c.

We did two laps of a 16.5m circuit; a mix of M40 motorway (5.3m @ 70mph), A and B road, 50 and 60 mph limits. 1 launch and a couple of aggressive 30mph roll-ons on each circuit. I drove the first lap and my wife the second lap. The climate control was set to 19c. The car had the 20" wheels (285 section rears).

At the start there was 65% SOC and at the end 47%.

The car is, in the main very familiar to my M340i in terms of steering wheel, cruise control, HUD and driver aids. The iDrive 8 large curved screen is better in the flesh than I thought it would be. Climate controls on the screen isn't really for me, but control everything else was fine. Displaying the map fully size was excellent.

In terms of space, I'm 5'10" and when sat behind my driving seat position there were no knee / head room issues as you'd expect. Rear view via the mirror was far more limited than my M340i, but noting that the outside headrest were not fully folded down.

I found the steering under launch a tad disconcerting (rather like the Thomas' comments in the Autogefühl review). It reminds me a bit of riding sports bike when the front goes light under power. I can't say I was a fan of this. I couldn't tell if this was the rear air suspension squatting or something else.

All driving modes worked as expected and in the main I drove in B (aggressive regen) which as a comparator, is pretty to close the level in the TM3P.

So to date, the EV test drives I have been: TMP3 x 2, Volvo XC40, Polestar 2, Jag iPace and now the i4 M50.

Purely on driving / cabin, my pecking order is:
1) i4 M50
2) Polestar 2
3) iPace
4) M3P
5) XC40

Hope this helps...

It was exactly the same in the eDrive 40 I took out, under load the steering goes really light. Hopefully it's something they can fix with a software update.

The pricing is really frustrating because the 40 is more than enough but by the time you spec it up you may as well get the M50. Spec for spec the gap is less than 5K.

As a driving experience, it's all very familiar, it just feels like a normal car that's battery powered and the interior is solid. I was impressed with the iDrive screen - the anti reflective screen they put on actually works, it was sunny when I took the car out and I could always see it clearly and there was no blinding reflections.

You can definitely feel the weight when you chuck it round a corner, it definitely doesn't feel as nimble as something like a Model 3.

Don't really understand what any of this means but I took a photo of journey data. Can't tell if it's good or bad.

Not if you're looking to maximize range as I am.

It has always been the case that is you load up a.lower.model BMW the pricing gets you close to the higher model in the same family.

That's no new to the i4.

Loaded 540.vs.550, 340.vs.440.....

There’s not really much between the 40 and M50 if you refrain from having the 20s, 344 vs 314. In the grand scheme of things 30 miles isn’t much difference

I’m betting real world numbers will be more than this. This will be my 4th EV and I appreciate the range advantage. The difference in acceleration is really meaningless to me. Mid 5 seconds is absolutely fine for me.

I drove the M50 and it's acceleration out of a junction is exceptional. This is implementation not just power.
Coming from a RWD 340i I really appreciated the AWD grip and go. I had already decided after 3 RWD BMW's that my next family car would be AWD. My previous RWD 330d was a tyre killer when the dollop of torque came in it often caused unplanned slip.
I am personally wary of high torque RWD cars now. My wife will not drive my car out of our driveway. So, another RWD was effectively off the table. So, now to find her a smaller <£40k ~200 mile range FWD or AWD 2nd electric car. Many are RWD on the lower spec more affordable models.
Our drive opens onto the apex of a bend a 40mph limit road, and pulling out can be difficult. In my car you must have the steering mostly straight before significant accelerating under all but the best road conditions. Traffic speeding often forces the issue… My wife's FWD Mini Cooper S just grips and goes. Under these conditions the Mini is far easier and quicker to accelerate to 40mph while turning.

Still waiting for my dealer to get a display model in, they’ve only got 1x 4 gran coupe too, I wanted to see a few to help confirm my colour choice, Im currently portimao blue but am really unsure without seeing the car in the flesh in the various colours.

Reviving this - hows everyone getting on.

Mine (e40) has no changes (111) since 12th of November and scheduled for mid April.

Had a test drive for an hour a couple of weeks ago, car was good. Performance was excellent as expected and was glad that the cabin noise was much reduced from my current 330e, which I think is dreadful.

The overall package didn’t wow me though, which I’m a bit disappointed in, was hoping to really really love it. I’m looking at the new C class and it’s interior and just thinking it’s so much better - I’m left wishing Mercedes did a fully electric version of it. In the end I Left the showroom still looking lovingly at the M3 and M4’s…..

As for delivery the dealer is still telling me June, and I’m definitely considering changing from portimao blue to Brooklyn grey.

Anyone with a UK M50 on order, I ordered back in November and have been told that release on this model won’t be until 3rd quarter 2022 so September at earliest.

I also ordered a UK M50 in November and was told Q2/3. No updates since. Handover date was pulled out of the air/salesman's arse and was meant to be 22/08/2022.
I hope it doesn't go into September. I will need to Tax, MOT, service and re-warrantee my present 340i as it turns 6…
I have never had a car for 6 years before!…
Oh well, more chargers on the road and more time with an inline 6 instead of Hanz Zimmer…

As far as I am aware I am the first to order the M50 with my dealer though there maybe be others by now so the only positive is no one will be ahead of me when they are finally released.

Have you any idea as to final spec you are thinking of?

My basic spec hasn’t changed from the start but colour wise I am bouncing between Sanremo Green and Dravit Grey.

I've gone Brooklyn Grey with 19's and extended black pack and lights. Black interior with blue stitching.
Option wise, Light pack, tech pack and comfort pack. Oh, and a tow bar, mostly for bikes.

Basically replacing what's on my 2016 340i. Though, some extra toys lumped in the packs and lots more cost…

Strangely, haven't wobbled much on the spec over the last three and a half months. Family practicality dictates a dark interior and after 3 dark grey BMW's I fancied a change. So, light grey… Or blue, or whatever the the light makes Brooklyn Grey look.

The only thing I was wobbling on is a de-badge. I couldn't get it factory deleted this time, so nervous about dealer removal… But, I like to fly below the radar…

I think I was the 3rd i4 at my dealer when I ordered on 11/11/2021.

How's your spec shaping up?

I’m debating between the 19s and the 20s, personally I don’t even do 200 miles per week so the extra range isn’t a concern, neither is the price but resale might be affected so will ask dealer if come that time a swap to smaller is an option otherwise it will be getting 20s.

I’m all in for the Tech pack, the comfort pack isn’t worth it in my eyes, I know my M5 has it but it was standard. The lights I like but again the adaptive lights I believe are standard so all you are really gaining is brightness and distance.

As for the rest it’s probably black/blue stitching, M seats, carbon trim, heated wheel, debating the shadow line but will get it on the lights, quite fancy the 50 year badging but £300 is nuts. Oh and as I said colours still up in the air, I’m currently Donington grey and want to go darker.

Want the keep the extras under check because I’ve my name down for the new Maycan EV for 2024.

When I first saw the I4 M50 I was wishing for Tanzanite.

I saw an 850 in Tanzanite and was smitten like you.

My first BMW was a dark blue with tan interior. The M50 I ordered is Tanzenite and Cognac.

I had Cognac in my 740d so decided go black with the M seats, it’s one of the feature I love with my M5 though they don’t offer the same adjustment on the i4M50 which is a shame.

It was nice to see the carbon trim too because it was an option I was ticking and it really does set the interior off IMO.
