Ordering an i4.

Hi,

We're new to BMW, but not EV. My wife is interested in the i4 rear wheel drive. I just reached out to a few dealers yesterday. One told me to put down a $1500 deposit, and they can place the order for July 2022 delivery. I'm in CA. And, there's a $5000 markup.

Is it true that BMW is accepting orders NOW?
Has any of you guys placed an order?
Was it for MSRP, or with ADM?
I don't think there's any discount to be had, is there?

Thank you!!

Look for another dealer, and wait for a MY2023.

I've also contacted several other dealers.
You're saying to wait for MY 2023, is it because of 1st year bugs, or because all 2022 are sold out?
Thanks!

2022 allocations are all sold. You might be able to find a demo car…. I don’t believe they’re required to keep them. That said, I wouldn’t pay anything over MSRP for it…. That’s just greed.

I’d reach out to other stores in your area… heck, anywhere within driving distance and see if you can get one for MSRP or less. Worse case, you’re in order bank for a 2023.

As an aside, I preordered on 6/1, received my production number today… week 5 build is the current estimate.

Cheers and Happy New Year!

2022 is all sold out. How that dealer can have a unit for delivery in July is a good question. Only people who pre-ordered last June can get delivery that fast. I pre-ordered at the end of June, and next July is the earliest I will get mine. Assuming they're not lying, the only way I can see that happening is if the people pre-ordering had a change of heart and canceled.

That all being said, there are dealers that will charge MSRP. And any new model will have more problems in its first model year than in later years. People are taking delivery in Europe right now, so follow these forums and see what problems get reported.

I was at my dealer today and talking to my SA, which is the internet sales manager.

They aren't marking up any cars, haven't marked up cars on the last decade and don't plan to.

All allocation for spring delivery is gone. My dealer has 22 cars scheduled for spring delivery. It's a mix of iX, i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50.

They have another 40 cars arriving before Oct. that are MY2022. They are just starting to see people get pushed into 2023 and it depends on model.

The iX and eDrive40 are the fist cars with the first M50 due in around April. My car is due in June because of color. Build is middle of May + 30 days for transport.

If they are quoting July delivery, then they are sticking you in a vacated slot. Looks like a customer may have changed their mind and the dealer kept the slot. To avoid paying the extra $5k; I'd suggest waiting but that means probably to 11/22 or later. So the $5k is to essentially jump the line.

Are you sure it's only 30 days? I have custom ordered multiple cars and it has never taken less than three months to ship from Germany to California.

Edit: Turns out I misremembered. It was three months from the time of ordering. Time on the boat was, indeed, 30-45 days from Germany.

Yeah, 4 weeks to the West Coast is wicked fast. My experience with east coast floats to Brunswick and then VPC and PCD is around 6-8 weeks once production is completed… really depends on the RoRo schedule, too….ships are taking longer and cars are stacking up at Bremerhaven… seeing 3-4 week backlog right now.

Exactly. I've tracked my car on the boat. A stop or two in Europe, then to the upper east coast, several stops as it goes south, then into the Gulf, a stop or two there, through the Panama Canal (and there's often a line there), finally up to Oxnard in California. My last car was built in South Africa, which added an additional month (it went from there to Germany).

At least Oxnard ain't Los Angeles or Long Beach.

I'm not sure, that's what I was told. 4 week or 10 weeks doesn't matter a whole lot after waiting a full year from pre-order.

And here we go guys. This is what I’ve talked about in several threads. There’s going to be a lot more of this coming. Guaranteed. Slimebag dealers doing what they do best, acting like slimebags.

I'm actually OK with dealers asking for ADM. As long as it's fully disclosed up front. It's bait and switch tactics that I find appalling.

Yeah, If you told me 6 months ago there would be market adjustment, I would have went directly to a "no markup" dealer.

Don't make people wait a year, then when they go in say, "by the way, we are going to need an extra $5-10k" for the car you paid a deposit on and waited for.

Talk about bad customer service. They might make money, but they would lose a.customer and get horrible reviews.

I'd park my new car on the street with a sign that says "This dealer uses bait and switch. Buy Elsewhere!"

How much business do you think they would lose? That's completely legal to do where I live. Free speech and all. Also the truth is always a defense.

I have done something similar a while back with a Ford Explorer my wife bought. They wouldn't honor an extended warranty they sold. I parked the car on the street out front with signs in the widow.

It took about an hour for them to come out and ask me for key to get the car in for work.

to clarify, when the dealer says MY2022 allocations are spoken for, are they talking actual 2022 vehicles, or ALL 2022 production vehicles? I say this because tradtionally with BMW June 2022 is the start of MY2023 cars...

Personally, I hope mine is a MY2023 if it's a Q3 or Q4 2022 delivery...

My dealer says anything ordered right now falls into Oct at the earliest delivery. So probably MY2023

Model year designation is referred, not calendar year.

It's confusing when different dealers gave me different answers.

Dealer A told me that he "thinks" the price will be MSRP, and that at this time "no dealership is able to place an order, and we will contact you when ordering is available".

Dealer B told me that I "can place an order at any time", and they'll need "to run my credit" asap. I asked why check my credit now when the car is a ways from getting here. He said they wanted to make sure that I'm able to pay for it. I have 800+ FICO, paying for it won't be an issue, but I'd hate for them to run it now, and then late in the year when the car arrives, the finance dept will most likely run the credit again.

Dealer I know and trust told me at least in the US their are no allocations. They can order as many as the customers ask for. Similar to Tesla your order delivery timing will be based on model, location and current production availability. I recently cancelled my G26 order because it arrived with no touchscreen as I and my dealer suspected. He had no issue moving my deposit towards the M50, and as of now we are expecting a summer delivery.

Just placed my $1000 deposit today. Rep said she believes summer delivery expected. I asked about reading that allocations for 2022 are all sold out. She said they just received their lot assignment this past week. Latest fall 2022.
Who knows at this time.
