Would there be an i4 M60?

After seeing the iX M60, and looking at the i4 offerings, it struck me a bit odd that the i4 didn't have an M60 option.

Why is BMW not offering M60 on the i4?

Current M3/4 share their engine with the X3/4 M.

Thought they would do something similar with the i series.

The iX is a bespoke BEV

For BMW to do an i4 M or M60 you would see an additional drop in range. The battery pack already comes in a more than 20% of the 5000lbs the M50 weighs. So adding more battery isn't a solution.

The i4 M50 in full sport trim with sticky 20" tires is down to 227 miles in range

Nobody wants to see a sub 200 mile performance BMW.

Anyway, how much faster does it need to be? Sub 4 second 0-60, 11 second 1/4 mile, drifting and burning up tires isn't enough???

Yes, but I'm a speed junky even though I only use 100% of it about 1% of the time.

BMW two levels of performance on each model, the high output engine (now called the M Performance), and the M. For an M60 to exist in the i4 model, the M50 must be dropped before the i4M can be introduced.

I4 is a 4 series, same market as the X3. You dont have 2 Mpack version with the ICE engine. You have the M40i and the full M.

IX is another beast, it is the size of an X5 but they have to cover 2 ICE model with a single EV model, the X3 and the X5. I think they offer the IX M50 to target the X3 M40i and the IX M60 to Target the X5 M50i.

what would probably be crappy is BMW dropping the M50 and replacing it with the M60 model mid-cycle...but I can see them doing that once they have a firmer understanding of the i4 line-up.

I can see them doing that if they introduce an AWD xdrive40 model

Until it's moved to a dedicated EV platform (or at least one that's primarily EV-focused), there's not a lot they can do I don't think.

CLAR is great for what it is, but still a compromise for an EV. The i4 is as heavy or heavier than other EVs that are one class up in size.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great first effort, and probably enough for most people, but a lot of us want something to sway us away from an M3 or M5 . . . and we're not there yet.

why would BMW creating an M60 be an issue for them not to do? It's just a higher state of power rear motor. It shouldn't add weight.

Unless you meant a full i4M, but perhaps it could be a great thing if they did that (doubt that would happen), reduce the weight by 200-250lbs through some extra alumimum and carbon, etc etc..

It would still be heavier than the competition for sure though.

I have the same thoughts.
Until it's the next platform forget about an M60.

With higher performance you will get less range. The criticism is already there because they don't have 300 miles in performance trim or that the car is heavy.

In terms of performance they are already knocking on the door of an M3/4. They don't need a 600HP EV with crappy range.

I was on the fence about an M3/4 or M50.
I went with the M50 because I wanted something lower in maintenance cost among other factors.

We'll see how much I like driving it.

They have a EV-focused platform (Neue Klasse) that should launch in 2025.

Allegedly, it's supposed to support smaller, FWD-based combustion engines as well . . . but reducing the area in front of the windscreen and eliminating the driveshaft tunnel should make it competitive.

Just had a thought. I'm new to EV's. Are there software flashes that can give you more HP's from the electric motors?

Yes, some are starting to come out on other platforms. I'm hoping BMWs 5th gen motors are the same across the i4/iX, which would mean we could possibly up the HP on both motors but I'm sure at the cost of battery life or other parts related to faster discharges.
