In the dark most cars look the same to me :P

Some funky designs are shadowed and looks better. Last shot looks good.

Maybe its their vision for when petrol runs out - maybe they arent trying to make a hybrid seller for decades.

Maybe they are saying " petrol is gonna run out, so lets design a platform for us to push new technologies and ideas. Lets put it into a package that exudes what BMW stands for. Yes we will make mistake, but hopefully in the future we shall be at the forfront of the electric race"

Or they could just be trying to copy tesla and Prisuses. I for one dont think electrical cars are the future, I think hydrogen needs to be used. However there needs to be big pushes in changing peoples view point.

We are so used to gas, we need products like this to tempt us into different fields.

Also I agree that there should be proper angel lights (ala concept) and please show me more of the laser light stuff - this is all I could find - seems it would be illegal in a lot of countries!

Also you know there is gonna be a Spyder version - and I think that will fix the ugly back on this car (hmm where would u put the roof? - no more passengers in the bacl).

The Spyder version is coming to the i8 .

Once again the same nonsense, V8 , V10 Supercar blah , blah .
The i8 will not crossover to BMW M. Its genes will benefit BMW M.
We have proven we do not need a Supercar at this time and the new M4 will further that statement. In a world where our competitors are electrifying existing concepts BMW have proved to be more innovative and more creative in their choices.
I have watched some of our competitors completely scrutinise both the i3 and i8 this afternoon and they are concerned , really concerned.
One abandoned this idea in favour of an electrified current sports car that will not make production and both are quite distant from the benefits of mass volume CFRP in a volume production model.

In 2 years time the all new BMW 7er which heralds an all new aluminium,CFRP mix architecture , CFRP body panels and high tech driver and passenger HUDs using the latest ConnectedDrive innovations will be the most technically advanced production BMW ever.

Today is more than a special day , its a day that BMWs leadership has effectively transformed the perspective of mobility. Today everybody shows where the market is at .

BMW want to show you where it's going...
Nicely said Scott, however I like that you say "at this time", purely because given the number of comments there is appetite for a supercar and Dr N said if one does materialise it'll have to be the best on the market. How many could afford one is another matter. I guess also we'll see how well the i8 does.

Personally I think it's stunning, but too expensive for me, plus I'm already getting 800 miles per tank out of my ED. Maybe I can afford one when I have a midlife crisis, or maybe I've gone past that already, driving like a grandma to get that kind of tank range.

Well the full torque is of course split between all four wheels, not just the rears, and since the wheels are 20", the contact patch is bigger than that of a 3er with 17's at 215 (for example)...

... plus underestimating torque to rear wheels is also fun

This is a halo car. its probably going to be the 3rd or 4th car for someone. it will sell more in the US as it has nothing to do with price of gas. if you can afford a 135k car, you don't care about price of gas.

It has more to do with a lifestyle choice/image. you want a sports car that looks unlike anything else on the street and has a drivetrain unlike anything else on the street--then this is for you. if you want a panemera/911/r8/aston, then by all means get one--you are not the target audience, although I am willing to bet many who buy this car will probably also own one of the aforementioned cars.

if you own one or two 100k car, this car is above your paygrade son

What was the point of your statement? I was simply stating my opinion of the car and the market I think will buy this car.

Iat the haters.
Imagine the technology that will be passed down thru the line up in the coming years. All the potential weight that can be dropped on future cars with the i8/i3 in an actual production run. Real world R&D...for the long term benefit. The future of performance is not about how much HP you have, but how much your fat ass weighs. I wonder what the 2021 M3/M4s are going to look like...how will they be powered...how much will they weigh...etc.

You bastards are a tough crowd...impatient and lack vision.

I know CFRP is expensive, and the tech for a car such as this as well, but I don't see why it should cost over 100k...
jesus christ what the the actual F is up with all these whiny ass comments.

bmw makes probably the most modern and innovative looking car out there and then its too expensive and only rich hipsters will buy it, its missing angel eyes, bla bla bla. who cares? they actually made something that belongs in 21st century but ooooh no, a bleedin 335 will get em further on a tank of gas... yes, until you go to limp mode for nth time, whatever. its not the pooint. its the right car for the times.

I wonder why the redline is at 6,500 in this new engine? Rather than 7,000 like all of BMW's other turbo petrol inline 4/6 engines.

This car looks so fast maybe that explains why the haters are so butt hurt that it won't keep up with a porshe 918, that costs ten times as much.
seriously good looking car, drive all week to work without using gas, then beat an r8 v8 light to light. pretty cool. I think it looks more forward and modern than ANY other car under 500 grand.

maybe BMW will make you guys a "halo" car that melts your face with acceleration so you can win some magazine races...

I agree, half of the whiners have "No Vision" and the other half are the nervous competitors.

That is a good question, and I don't know but musing out loud I wonder if the fact that it has some serious boost (230 hp from a 3-cyl is REALLY impressive, something that seems to be glossed over by the "put a V10 in it" crowd) and reliability is the name of the game with this car?

Could be, don't know, but that's my speculation.

Thats a very possible explanation. Although, I remember the less powerful (and probably less boosted) versions of the b38 (the ones in the 1er that they showed to the press) also had sub 7k redlines. Weird.
