Convincing My father Coupe vs Sedan

Okay let me start off and throw this out there... I am spoiled rotten... and im aware of that.

On to the real reason for this thread...

My father has offered to buy me a 3 series to reward me for doing well in college (yes i spoiled... no i dont deserve it.... but yes i do enjoy it greatly). Hes really leaning towards a sedan because its cheaper upfront and cheaper to insure. The thing is im not the biggest fan of the sedan body style (compared to the coupe anyway) and i really dont need 2 extra doors and theres no reason my dad needs me to have them either. Currently i drive an Acura RSX Type S and get by fine with my 2 doors. Anyway... is there any way i could convince him? Do you guys have any ideas other than the fact that "hey it looks better". Any idea what the insurance difference would be?
Im talking about the 328i btw.... not lucky enough for a 335 lol.

If all this bargaining doesnt work out i guess i can always just steal his M Z4 coupe when i wanna have some real fun

Ps. I know im fortunate enough just to possibly getting a sedan... but.... lifes to short to drive a car you arent completely in love with.

Im expecting a lot of flaming on this one... being the spoiled brat that i am.... lol

tell him it encourages you to wear your seat belt b/c it hands it to you. Also point out that the price difference also comes from things being standard on the coupe that are an option/not included with the sedan.

I don't think there is reason, other than the 'it looks better' for preferring the coupe. However, the insurance payment for a new 328 is likely to be less than your current car (no matter what your final choice is), the reason being those small Acuras are a nightmare for the insurance companies. Furthermore, the price difference between the E90 and E92 is not as big as it seems, if you factor in the adaptive headlights that come standard with the coupe (of course you'll explain your dad it is a safety feature and helps prevents accidents).
Hope this helps. Good luck.

I respect your dad's logic, but honestly, I have always been against parents deciding what their kids should want or have.

What if you compromised? Ask your dad if he would be willing to deposit the purchase amount into a high interest saving account or CD, then use the extra money earned to pay for the higher costs of owning the coupe?

Bit of advice: the internet is a great equalizer. You have complete control over how you appear to others; nobody here knows who you are unless you tell us. Age, occupation, race, gender...all irrelevant. I routinely posted on BMW and Porsche boards when I was 16 and 17 (not that long ago), and never had a problem. Why? Because:
1.) I can actually spell and write (ever notice how all these kids getting cars for "doing well in school" or "graduating with honors" have the language skills of a 5th grader? Or are my standards simply unrealistic?)
2.) I didn't go into every thread broadcasting "btw im 17 and drv n m3 plz dont flameee lololz "

Simply amazing. I'm still not sure if the majority of these cases are simple attention whoring, or sheer stupidity. Perhaps a bit of both. If you don't want to be flamed for your age (i.e. you don't want "real world" predjudice to become an issue), then don't be your age.

Secondly, nobody here knows your dad better than you do. We aren't going to be overly helpful in this matter. If you cannot figure out a way to persuade a man you've known your entire life, how are we going to manage? But here's a hint: from little you've said, I can gather that your dad is fairly rational. Therefore you must approach him on rational terms - use numbers and facts. Offer to pay down the difference (purchase price and insurance) if you must. This will demonstrate that you are willing to put effort into acquiring what you want (note that I come from a family where "doing well in school" was a minimum expectation, not an achievement - and I'm German, not Asian), and actually contributing to the purchase will give you some small bit of leverage. If you aren't willing to do this, then you don't really want the coupe. That is more than likely how your dad will see it.

I'm sorry. I don't intend to be rude, but please - think.

Why? Whoever contributes the funds and owns the controlling interest makes the decision. That's how it works in the business world. Your sentiment would have more merit if the dad's reasoning was simply arbitrary.

Tell him its a young mans car and therefore, it should have a young mans' feel to it.The coupe is much better at exerting this, than the sedan

By the way, you seem to 'deserve' your car more so than many your age do.

tell him that at your age( college...im 22, so you have to be close), it is important to have something you really like, considering the fact that this is the car that you will have for 4-5 yrs(the golden years)....thats how i ended up with a coupe...instead of a sedan/suv

if you are that spoiled then just hold your breath until you get what you want. hell if you can go 2 or 3 minutes you may as well ask for the new M3.

You're kidding, right?

These are the worst threads. No offense, but what logical information do you think you'll really get from asking this type of question?

yeah well im not gonna flame, as we all were young. still am! lol i was spoiled like u man, just say to your father very upfront and honest: dad, i think the coupe is better off for me, it fits my personality better than a sedan. I dont want to drive something that im not completely happy with, and im willing to pay up the difference.

Your getting out of college, and its time to grow up. mom and dad wont be here as much, and if you want that coupe badly, you should be willing to cough up a little bit of dough for it. and dont worry, the chances are that hes going to be soo proud of you because ur acting like a man, one thing all fathers are touched to see, then he may just very well end up paying for it. if not, big deal, pay the difference! i hope my words of wisdom will help u out. on a personal note: i think the sedan is lovely, and i wouldnt bitch, but thats cuase i like the sedan better. so do WHATEVER it takes to get the coupe. i was in a similar situation, worked out well. I got that Lance evo i always wanted! lol but then i grew up. and got a Real mans car: a BMW.

once again, good luck pal
