If that is the key for the first batch and they don't offer a free or at least "relatively cheap" upgrade path, then something is wrong. If they're going to let this car come in as hot as it appears, undercooked in some areas, then I hope they take a page from McLaren and Tesla with rolling updates/upgrades to existing customers.

http://www.autoblog.com/2014/04/04/m...king-official/

What's sad is that the lack of information and ability to finalize an order makes sense with the context that they are cutting features up to the last minute and want to wait until the last minute to break the bad news. I would personally rather have them push the launch back 6+ months rather than shove a half-baked, hamstrung version of what they originally intended and will eventually offer.

If any people from BMW i are reading this and you're going to go ahead with the launch, get in front of this problem by telling customers up front whether you will offer things like the display key to existing customers down the road or if they are just purchasing a car that is significantly inferior in features and content to what they can purchase in a few months.

If only BMW could make a real supercar that could compete with the likes of a SL63, 991, R8 etc. That would be something to be excited about.

Weird looking and with cheap materials (i.e., F3X)

it is me, or the more I am looking at it I get the impression that the materials don't reflect the price?
I mean, I am looking at the fit and finish on some angles and it is not top notch, I am looking at the line of the rear seat and looks terrible instead of having a beautiful straight line. The plastic also seems very cheap, the cup-holder in the back looks like an eBay add-on...
On the door hinge side, one rubber seal does not go all the way to meet the other piece, and the other rubber sits in an awkward position. On the opposite side, where the door strut is, the rubber looks absolutely terrible and is bended in a very weird way in three different places, like it was not designed to flow perfectly in every angle.
Under the car, the shield that runs under, looks like a tray, perfect to host gravel and mud, why they didn't finish that somehow to make it appealing and nice is out of my understanding.
The top is already scratched, under the car there are also some marks already and is brand new, what the heck?
I was considering this car, however, I did not touch it or see it yet, but if my presumptions are correct, then I will lose A LOT of respect for them and put my money in something else. When you ask that kind of money and you are presenting your halo car in this way then you will really go down.
This car should be stellar from A to Z.

Never say never to 100% electric.

You can always have one car that runs on fuel.

The i8 is conceptually more groundbreaking than any of those.
Its a sports car for the next generation , if sports cars were effectively made extinct by ever-increasing legislation. The i8 shows the progression of a sports car.

Oh and the i8 is anything but cheap referring to the interior.

Look at Audi and the special edition RS7 part of the extra $40,000 goes towards Carbon detailing yet the i8 is extensively made from CFRP and costs less.

The std key is the one provided for all demonstrators - the first cars made available from production. The i8 test fleet in Munich still use the std key as we are not ready to show the display key yet, but its still to come.

Yes details can be poorly overlooked. It's hard to overcome a poor first impression without a doubt.

I think you're confused. When I say it should "come in ///M" I mean I wish the M division would use this platform to create a proper M car. Meaning one with an M power plant, suspension, transmission, etc. I don't mean simply slapping an M badge on it, that wouldn't be a true M car. Much like an M235i isn't a proper M car. It seems a lot of people think it's the badge that makes the car nowadays, rather than how and where it was made.

I hope they offer this color on the wide spectrum of all other vehicles, i.e. 435, m4, and so on so forth.

So mine comes from July production with std key? Is it possible to upgrade display key later on?

That's what I'm curious about. A little upfront goodwill message of "we'll ship display keys to customers as soon as they are available" would be nice.

I interpreted Scott26's reply to mean that the display key is not being used on the demonstrator cars, but will be coming with the production i8's shipped to customers. At least, that's what I'm hoping is true, as the display key certainly is a novel feature.

It's been re-emphasised by my BMW i dealer today that the 'Display Key' will not be coming to the i8!

Shame. I hope upgrade is possible later on.

I'm slightly confused that even though i8 has been under development since 2008 or so, we still don't have all equipment available right from the start of production. Pulling out "A-" cars without laserlights and display key following "full A" cars just few months later is a small downside. I understand that BMW had a clear plan during the years

2009 VED
2011 i8 concept
2013 i8 production

and they kept that pace, but rolling out i8 at IAA 2013 pushed the start of the production too tight in order to avoid long delay between market launch. So all the equipment were not ready for production in this schedule?

Anyway, the whole car is so revolutionary and fabulous that the lack of small add-ons doesn't change the game, but I'm thinking this question from general point of view.

I am in China at the moment and we are illustrating the display key. Is it a market decision? Or is like some markets that will not be offered the Laser-Light option?

Well, if it is market driven, many of us are wondering what markets will get it, and will it be available immediately or phased in over time?

Does 'proton's blue cancel out any 'electrons' for the electric motors.

PS. I am very 'neutron' on this subject...

Sorry guys, I hope they are wrong, but they are adamant that the 'Display Key' will not be available on early i8 cars. And the only reason why I'm not saying it won't be available on the i8 full stop (despite them being pretty clear that it wouldn't be), is that you should 'never say never' and decisions can sometimes change. Hence I'm still trying to get a clause put into the contract that should (in the unlikely event) the Display Key become available for the i8, that I can upgrade to it.

It wasn't completely clear from their communication, but it sounded as though it wasn't a local marketing decision (i.e. not just limited to BMW UK). Laser lights were always more likely to be market dependant due to local governments' regulations / legal requirements wrt headlight restrictions etc.

I've got a hard copy (and electronic copy as well) of the attached BMW brochure. But literally just a couple of days after they arrived in UK dealerships, the dealerships were told by BMW to not give them to customers and to destroy/return them due to incorrect information in them! N.B. the 'Display Key' is listed as a standard option, so maybe this is part of the "incorrect information" they are referring to.

So it really does seem (unfortunately) that despite the Display Key being a great idea, and that it was BMW's intention to bring it to market, they have had to (for whatever reason(s)) pull the plug on the Display Key.

@SCOTT26, when you say you are illustrating the Display Key at the moment, do you mean images etc in a magazine, or do you have a real life, fully working prototype Display Key?!?

So to conclude, it really does seem as though we are going to have to get used to the bad news that we won't be getting the awesome-looking Display Key.
