Standard tyres only 6mm tread when new?

Hi all,

I had a pair of rear tyres this week at BMW. Standard issue Bridgestones. I noted on the service sheet that they only have 6mm tread when new. I think that all tyres on my other cars have 8mm when new.

What's the reason? They are 3rd used as soon as they are fitted. Bmw recommend replacement at 3mm, so are we actually expected to pay £200+ for 3mm usage?

Yep it does seem like your being cheated when you buy a tire with less tread on it. The reason for it.....less tread has less rolling resistance and is quieter when the tire is new.

Thanks. Yes, assumed as much. I think that tyre consumption is the only downside of my i8 so far

I queried this too when I had to replace a pair so on my request, the tyre garage called Bridgestone to get further details. Rolling resistance was the answer, they didn’t mention the noise but I guess that may be true too.

I have read a lot of threads from overseas where other tyres are fitted to i8’s but when I have asked in the UK about other tyres, I am always told that you should use the standard Bridgestone for insurance reasons. You are right, we are buying part worns!

I compared the stock Potenza S001 tires to my aftermarket tires. Both had been on the car for exactly 10k miles. It's very sad to see a stock tire nearly worn out after 10k miles, but a Contiental DWS06 all season performance tire lose only 0.8mm after 10k miles. I noticed that rolling resistance and noise are more of a factor at low speeds. At highway speeds, I'm not seeing any change in gas mileage or noise. At low speeds, I went from 55MPG to 50MPH on electric with aftermarket tires. Is that savings in gas mileage worth the extra money I spend on tires? I think not. I'd rather have a tire that performs better and is more cost efficient, while hearing a little bit more road noise. In addition, I can go into turns at higher speeds because the car isn't oversteering anymore. I'll never go back to the stock tires.

Here's my review of both after 10k miles:

I put a set of Pirellis on mine to replace the Bridgestone, definitely lasting longer and slightly more supple i think too. Exactly the same size and spec as the Bridgestones, so i can't see an insurance issue, sounds like nonsense to me.

Yes i was told by the BMW advisor those tires are only suppose to last 7k to 10k miles at the most.

they were £720 plus fitting for all four, but that was a couple of years ago! Pirelli p zeros, not looked recently as they're still fine 7000 miles later, still at least 5mm on them

Seems like a good call. I'll need a pair of fronts soon so will report back.

In fairness, my fronts have done over 24k miles. It seems to be just rears that it eats.

I've just replaced my tyres today after 15,000km (a little less than 10,000 miles) and 6mm confirmed.

I decided to go reference tyres since, if I need to do any warranty work and I don't have standard tyres, then I could hear BMW saying: "Well, of course the air compressor failed. Your tyres aren't standard."

Still, given my annual km turnover, they should last me 3-4 years.

Michelin Tyres

Hi

Michelin have recently released a 215/45 R20 Pilot Sport 4 S to go with their 245/40R20 4S.

I have just replaced my original Bridgestones with a set of the 4S.

Too early to compare them with the Bridgestones at the moment but definitely no worse and about the same cost.

Ooh thats great news, I swapped my Bridgestones for Pirellis of the same size, but they were the only two options at the time. Prefer the Pirellis to the Bridgestones for sure, but historically Michelin have definitely been the best.

I've just fitted some Nokian WR D4 215/45 R20 to the front. My first every winter tyres and their great! Grippy and maybe a little softer riding (I'm commuting 60miles a day) they make e-mode much zippier with less traction issues.
Bought and fitted for £60 each from tyreleader.
