Tragic accident.
So many aircraft at the same time in the air. Risky situations.

He was banking left and being a low-wing there was no way to see the B17. He should have been clearing the airspace before turning. The B17 was flying pretty straight and level, though it isn't clear from the video for how long.

I was fortunate enough to see both of these in operation in July of this year. Gave me goosebumps to see these machines up close, especially the B17 as it roared to live literally feet from me and roared down the runway on its way to take flight.
Devastating news. Two pictures I took during the show: Last edited by P1; 11-13-2022 at 09:00 PM.. |

To irresponsibly offer a barely informed interpretation:
Looked like the P-63 may have been flying loose formation with another aircraft ahead, above, and to the left. If he was, then that’s likely where his eyes were. In that case, he never had any idea the B-17 was there. Even aside from the low wing blocking his view. Frigging stupid and tragic loss of life and aircraft. |

Really so sad. Those people who dedicated so much time and effort to keep that history alive...
The B17 was based near me and I'd see it flying around a few times a year. The sound gets your attention right away. When my son was little we went to a local airstrip and it was there and we got to go through it. I've a picture of him looking out the side gunner window.

Juan Browne provides a good initial analysis, plus the operating rules surrounding airshows, etc.
