just venting - schools & IT

Guy's
I'm just here to vent some frustration, not looking for a fix.

So when did schools stop using books and pens and paper and a teacher teaching them sh*t.

I got it in lockdown, but now were in in-person learning.

The basic's is that DD instead of doing work at school she's flipping screens and on chat's and socialising. Then bringing home all the assignments instead of doing them at school

She has 24 assignments.

Today (was a PE day) so I said, ok, do at least 3 assignments, then watch a bit of TV, 2 hours later, not one, I check her history, chats, youtube, emailing, gatcha life crap.

Unless somone is standing over her she's jerking about.

The problem is her SCHOOL laptop is NOT locked down and they DON'T check her history. A teacher of 20-30 kid's is not really interested in one student whoes messing about.

I don't mind her doing anything, but God get some work done.

Having a word with the teacher on Monday, because TBH, I've got to the end of my tether on this. She will fail her class work and probably won't pass her exams (she 11) bacause she's not doing her BASIC work

I've tried threatening her, I tried positive enhancements, treats standing over her, God, whilst I can lock down her computer at home I CANT lock down her school laptop.

I also got a new computer which I havent had a chance to lock down.

The problem the school uses these chat rooms for learning so you can't lock that down and you can't lock down youtube because they use it to learn as well.

She is 100% addicted. I mean, how do you deal with an alcoholic, you take the beer away from them right ? You dont put them in a room with pop water and a bottle of jack and hope they do the right thing.

Sorry I am just really venting , I don't want this to descend into a big argument.

Shheeet please just go back to old school books and getting wacked when you talk to your friends instead of listening to the teacher

Same reason they don't teach cursive or managing a check book. Everything is automated. I totally get your frustration though. They setup these kids to fail...

BTW, the school she's going to is a school for children identified as gifted.

She was ID'd a few years ago as gifted, and OH fought to get her tested etc and get her into this new school

They have a fantastic program including, coding, robotics etc, she will have so many opportunities and yet she's just wasting it

Its not just her, many if not most kids are like that these days. Their whole life is the damn phone nothing else matters besides social media and those damn likes including their future.

What is she enjoying that isn't school work?
Maybe she's not on task because she doesn't like the school? isn't making friends? feels inadequate/dumb?
not everyone has that part of them that tries to impress/appease others. maybe hers hasn't developed yet.

I only have my niece to go by. And she does well and is on task anytime I see her. But everything is on that stupid tablet.

I believe that CTinline-six can probably elaborate further, but I am under the impression that K-12 schools are required to lock down computers and provide censor tools by federal law. At one point, I believe that it was even codified as a condition of receiving E-Rate funding.

Are they in violation of the law for not blocking those sites? More importantly, are YOU legally on the hook for anything that your minor child does on social media? It's a huge problem in these parts with kids using snapchat and other similar apps to bully others and make bomb threats that seem to be closing schools almost daily in our region.

I can tell you what happens when a teacher in a room of 5th graders tells them to search the web for nun pictures when Net Nanny is malfunctioning, and it isn't pretty when it takes them to OnlyFans fetish sites.....

Actually she enjoys school being an OC, she has no siblings, so she enjoys the SOC. bit too much, and that's fine.

But the school work has to be done, the problem with computers is they can hide behind flipping screens and chat to each other. Which usually in a class without computers they have no other choice.

I wonder how demoralising it must be for a teacher teaching class and having kids just look at a laptop screen.

I understand periods where you would use computers, BUT every friggin class. Do they take there laptops out there as well when doing physical education

ATEOTD I'm not worried about her liking school or liking lessons or any other soft pc thing, SHE HAS TO learn, the 3 r's, "reading riting and rithmitic"

I get your reply, I'm not interested in her liking school, she just has to do it. AT 11, she doesnt have a choice, sorry if I come off as a hard a$$, but I'm a parent, not her friend.

If she flunks school and can only pump gas for a living, whose fault is it... it's the parents. I'm not one of these helicopter parents. But jeez this is just a total eye opener.

We all had to do it, go to school, learn, come home, hopefully not get our lunch money taken away

I'm north of you great white north of you

but that's a good point.

I think as I said they are "exploiting weakness's in the system"
They have google chat, google classroom, where they collaborate, so you can't block that, there's not going to be a moderator on that. YT they use for research.

As I said on her home history, it was all google chat and youtube replies on "gatcha life"

Look, even at work I watch video's of cats, drifting BMW's and Gordan Ramsey, when the boss is not looking, but not at the detriment of not doing the work.

mentale note: "OnlyFans fetish site"

Hmmmm... like me. Sitting here posting this shit instead of doing the work I should be doing. Fucking internets!!!!!

As for the original topic... yeah I dunno. I don't have kids so. However I'm guessing that's what all the old people think about the next generation. I'm young enough to have had the internet through high school and college, but old enough to not have had smart phones and social media. I think that's the sweet spot, but again I'm guessing everyone is biased to however they grew up.

For those of you with kids though ya'll probably fucked. Actually we are all probably fucked when these little shits are running things. Hopefully our AI overlords will have taken over by then and the next generation can focus on their insta and tiktoks. Now get off my lawn!!!!

The one thing I remember and I see often is that if the adult doesn't show interest in what the child is doing, the child looses interest. It's never OK to tell a kid 'I don't know'. The correct response is 'lets find out together'. Actually it goes for adults also. Just because you're an adult does not mean you lost the ability to learn something new. Hell I only know about the modern world because I've learned about it from kids.

The one neat thing I have found through live so far is that there are multiple ways to accomplish the same task. School, from what I remember, teaches a single way to accomplish a goal and expects everyone to travel that same path. It does not mean it's the most efficient path, the safest path or the hardest path. It's just the path the curriculum says has to be taken.
What if your kid isn't learning well or is disinterested in that path? Or worse yet has found a better path but has been scolded for deviating?
With age I've found that much of the time I spent in school was only to get the grade and make everyone happy. I really didn't learn anything. I got straight A's because I was good at tests. I can do process of elimination very well, but I didn't know the correct answer. Now older I tend to know correct answers because I've found a real world application for them and have used it. I'm a learn by doing person.

But to help you directly with the kids computer stuff, you should be able to limit access through you home access point. This might offer some help? But it will limit everyone in the household. You'll have to read further but I think there should be a way to apply it to only 1 mac address (kids computer).
https://kb.netgear.com/24053/How-do-...-web-interface

There are ways to apply limits / kid protection outside of a single device, or on a single device. I think that's actually what you're looking for.

Yep, every GEN-X parent I talk to, same thing, kids don't give a crap about anything.
Zero sense of curiosity, a desire to try, explore, compete, etc.
The internet/social media has essentially robbed them of... well life.

And to top it off, suicide rates are climbing dramatically.
The biggest factor... 2007... the introduction of the iPhone and social media thereafter.
Google it. Correlation isn't necessary causation but what else in society has changed that had such an
effect on kids (and people)?

I ran church youth groups back in the 90s and early 2000s.
I don't recall seeing or hearing any parent talking about their kids having anxiety, lack of motivation, or suicide
at the levels we see today.

so had a phone call with the teacher, and really went the way I was expecting it, usual excuses, "can't lock down computers," a lot of soft speak, "yes understanding, but"
however they are looking at now after Covid of pupils, "sharing" computers instead of having a personal device.
so the chance of goofing is reduced as you will impact your classmates chances at handing in work on time.

did you know that was told that, DD should not be coming home asking questions but just doing the work from focusing on what they do in class.

HOWEVER, they are not compelled to take HAND WRITTEN NOTES, no, the teacher uploads stuff on line, pupils can "type" things on the computers but he is trying to encourage them taking notes.

ENCOURAGE THEM...

WTF NOT TAKING NOTES, how are they going to revise for exams ?

Is anyone else not seeing a problem here,

They kinda really run you down into the ground with there "understanding" and "soft speak" and parents have a say in there side

No wonder kid's are flunking school. I really really dispair

Goto school get you book out learn, make notes, do homework, study for exams using notes.... when did this model break ? when was this model deemed in appropritae, when the crap did computers EVER get into this equation

Thinking about this, I can't see that my DD has any form of notebook.

I got a whole wack of notebooks for all her studies and they are all sitting in her room, pristine, un-used, pens, pensils, sharpeners, erasers, not used

I even got her a little BMW kit I saw which had a cool little protractor in it

not used.

Tax incentives.
LOL

Home/work/driving I'm always looking for something to write on. I have my phone within arms reach but I just don't know how to take notes with it. And the few I have, I don't know how to find them easily. I haven't spent the time to learn how to yell at it ... I really should (want to) learn. But I feel weird talking to no one. Doesn't matter if I'm all alone or not, only crazy people talk to themselves.

So what do they do for an art class?
Computer shit too?

Granted the good income right now is computer based stuff. But those aren't life skills unless you want to be that person who has to pay anyone to do anything for you.

It's things like this that make me glad I never had kids, or I guess realistically it'd be my grandkids going through this school stuff in 3-7.
