Post i8 Oil Analysis Thread - B38A15T Engine

I had a post break-in oil change done, and had the dealership pull a sample. The sample was sent to Blackstone Labs. I'll continue to pull samples with every oil change, and over the years, I'll post the results here.

Feel free to add your own results if you get your oil checked.

Do you have a reference of what the values are after a later change. What I mean, do these values support an oil change after the brake in period? I have maintenance paid for 5 years, but it only includes services made according to the service plan, so I have 28000km to go before oil change. If I ahd some kind of reference, I might have leverage to do it earlier.

No, it can't mean anything yet. It is merely one point of data. It will require more points to see if there is a trend or any aberration. So, if more of you provide your samples, then we, as a group, have more data from which to draw conclusions. Until then, there is no science.

The Blackstone reports usually include Universal Averages for the engine type that lets you compare you results with the average results from others. I doubt that they have any history with this engine, so it will be a while before they build Universal Averages.

You should see the metals go down after a few more changes as the engine breaks in.

I didn't include the text evaluation that the Lab wrote. It indeed stated "...it should be no surprise that this is the first sample we've seen from an i8..."

:-)

SOme of those metals, like Moly, are in the oil, and not from wear of the engine. THey have a file on their site that helps explain things, and there's stuff readily available on the web to help anyone understand. The one thing that surprises me are the viscosity values. May not mean anything except to an engineer, and may be well within the expected range, and then, the oil used during breakin, might be different than 'normal' oil. Modern engines are pretty tightly machined to ensure reliable EPA results, but they still produce more metal wear during the first 1-2K miles than afterwards.

Latest numbers from my engine.

It would be interesting to see other people's stats. If you care. The "universal averages" are still just my numbers.

Or am I the only data nerd who drives an i8?
Do y'all just drive it because it's pretty?

According to my salesman, mine is outfitted with a Flux Capacitor. Don't know how it works, but it sure looks mighty purdy!

After I get my i8, you won't be the only one.
But have to say it looks like you're it (right now).

Are you changing the oil yourself? (seein' how you got a sample)
Can't find any info. on this forum or UTube with that bit of info.
Shouldn't be that big a mystery for an itty bitty 3 cylinder engine.

I sent off my BMW LL01 FE 0w30 oil to Blackstone after accumulating 5k miles. The car had over 28k miles on it. Here are my results.
