This has been a problem since the second car was built. So many challenges.

This story is from Toronto just a few days ago. The "clients" actually set fire to the road when the coppers showed up. They now have something like 19 clients in custody.

I was working in 52 Division which is the downtown core of Toronto. It was dayshift and I encountered him driving a white 60's Malibu or Biscyane that had a huge mural on the hood, and as I recall was a kind of low rider thing. It had California tags. Anyway he was driving like an idiot so I did a traffic stop on him in front of the Sutton Place Hotel, he id'd himself with a NY licence and while I was dealing with him his posse came out of the Sutton Place which is where the celebs all stay in Toronto.

His attitude was shit and theirs was worse. I had a couple of other cars spin by to show the colours. One of his people said to me "don't you know who this is", I indicated that I didn't and he replied "this is DMX, the biggest rap artist on the planet"......I replied "do I look like I listen to rap music? I thought my Sgt. was going to piss himself. Anyway Mr. DMX got a mitt full of coupons and almost got arrested when I towed the car. He wasn't very happy.

I think I still have his autograph in an old bankers box someplace.

Second paragraph belongs in the LOL thread! That's awesome, sounds like he richly deserved it. Nice to have celebs be reminded from time to time that they are no better than the average Joe.

I would have loved to be walking by to catch the show.

Just curious, why wasn’t he arrested? Now that would have been a great example but I fear if I did what he did I would have been arrested. Not trying to throw rocks here, just trying to understand.

His driving didn't make the threshold for criminal offences, I recall issuing him a number of offences under the HTA, Ontario has a reciprocal agreement with most states including NY so there was no reason to detain him for that. And although he failed the attitude test when the car was towed he didn't cross the line. It was made clear that getting arrested would mean detention for a few days as he didn't have a Canadian address. His crew were much closer to getting to stay with us. I can be very diplomatic though.

Depending on the circumstances I would leave it alone, but some other officer/deputy might tow it.

Does driving an unregistered vehicle void you're insurance? I mean if it does then this car is going to be on the road unregistered and uninsured for over a month. That's quite a gamble for even a very good and cautious driver because so many other drivers are not good or cautious.

Not at all. You'll be fine. Put the car into PNO (...planned not operation) status until you're ready to pay it.

As someone who has had there ccw in California, what is your recommended dialog/approach to the officer when getting pulled over or interacting with LE? I have taken a ccw classes and they tend to say the same thing, but whats an actual officer's opinion?

Does California have a requirement to notify the officer?

Doesn't look like California is on the list

ALWAYS disclose!!! I had a CCW in California a few years before I ever became a cop. Disclosure to an officer is not a big deal.

Listen, do not follow the advice of people who tell you not to disclose. As LEO's, we can pull you out of the vehicle at any time and for any reason (...or no reason at all). If you don't disclose and I decide to remove you from the vehicle and search you......and I feel a gun, it's going to be a bad day for you until things get sorted out. It's not worth the hassle.

How often are you encountered with drivers who record but who also argue/deny to show ID, exit the vehicle and say/ask the following:

What did I do?
For what reason?
I didn’t do anything wrong!!
Call your supervisor!!

Well here's the thing......

....they can record all they want, but they won't have their phone in their hands pointing it in my direction. I can articulate in court gun phones, etc. They won't win that one.

Also, if a person refuses to provide identification, refuses to exit the vehicle, requests a supervisor, etc., they are going to jail for my trouble.

I don't encounter a lot of push back. I have quite a bit of command presence on a traffic stop. I can count on one hand the number of times a person has requested a supervisor. I wear a body cam, so that shuts down a lot of the bullshit.

Crazy and very sad. RIP.

I think it is awful that some people forget that there are many individuals who are willing to: (1) put themselves in harms way, (2) deal with people at their worst, and (3) help those in need. Instead, those people choose to focus on, what I firmly believe, are the outliers.

The killer was so quick shooting the officer in the head, had no chance and no reason to believe he was in danger stopping him about legality of tint windows and check reg papers.
Thank goodness the nutter was terminated before killing someone else.
