BMW i8 Door Projector Lights

I'm sure I've read somewhere that the i8 Roadster has the door projection lights which fire a BMW or an i8 logo onto the ground.

Can anyone confirm if this is the case? If so, is this the sort of thing that can be retrofitted to earlier models?

I know that the earlier models have the "puddle lights" so in theory it should be possible to install one. However, I've got some doubts on how effective it would be given the height of the doors when open.

Yes the new i8 roadster does have projector lights instead of the normal puddle lights.

I have not found a retrofit kit to change the older i8 to this.

I think it looks corny- but to each their own.

As if the i8 needed more "look at me"

New roadsters have the projector lamps which display an i8 logo. The lamp is in the same position on the door but when I asked BMW parts in Exeter for the part number of a Roadster lamp, his catalogue only listed the Coupe version. Even when he was looking at the parts catalogue for a Roadster, the same part number came up for the Coupe. It’s as if you can’t buy them even for the Roadster which is strange.

This was a week or so ago and they said that they would investigate and get back to me but so far nothing.

Thanks all. Interesting that you can't seemingly get the parts for the Roadster yet. That's surely just got to be a matter of time.

There are plenty of 'aftermarket' kits available, but my worry is that they focus point/brightness won't be right given the height of the doors.

I upgraded the door projection lights in my 2019 roadster so they display Netflix in the footwells when the doors are closed.

(just kidding)

Lightbulb

I've checked out everything - even at Leipzig at the production road - and I also opened the paneling of my coupe door.:
There are special projector lights inside the roadster door.
They are bigger than a matchbox (nearly as big as a cigarette box) and so they are way bigger than the lights of the coupe lights (thumb tip).
Everything looks almost the same from the outside, but neither the duct nor the space inside is suitable

Actually there is no way - you would have to swap the whole door panel. Round about 1.500,- Euro each of them

Therefor your dealer can't find the matching numbers for the roadster lights in a coupe door.

And I can't imagine there are a suitable aftermarket solution for this very special mounting situation

BTW yes they are the (in my opinion) stupid i8 and I plan to try to replace with just plane projected light if its the same part. When I compared visually to my 2015 coupe it looked like the same size/etc but this was a quick glance.

You drive an i8, pop the door open and think a floor projector is needed?

Nope.

10 years after the prototype, the i8 still looks like the future - whatever is under the skin.

I don't think anyone *needs* a floor projector, but some people (like myself) do like the look of them. Hence why I was keen to know if a retrofit was possible.

Mr.SugarSkills - thank you, we share some common thoughts !

MajorJump - apologies, my tone probably was a little dismissive. I can see why door projectors would appeal and they certainly wouldn't take anything away from the i8, they're just not for me.

No problem NGR. I do take your point that the car is about as futuristic as they come, I was hoping for a cool upgrade that wasn't too tacky (hence the appeal of a official kit), but looks like it isn't to be. I'll have to stick with my plain, boring i8 😉
