Questions on i8 long range driving?

I live 214 miles of 80 mph highway driving each way from work. How is the i8 for these trips.
1. Is all the battery spent pretty quick then you are just on the little 1.5L?
2. Can the car even make it that far on a full tank and charge?
3. What kind or RPM is the little motor spinning at that speed?
4. Rumor has it 30 mpg on the gas motor alone?
Does anyone do this?
I don’t plan to do this often but I definitely want to do it on occasion.
Ive been searching for this info but haven’t found anyone doing long trips. Thank you

1. the little engine is really powerful and recharges the battery while driving (not racing)
2. Yes
3. very little, but not visible. RPM is only in Sport Mode displayed.
4. more 40mpg (I do 6L/100km normal driving. Thats about 40mpg)

Agreed you will do 40.0MPG unless you can charge your car at work and depends if you have a LCI or a pre-LCI car.

You can’t see the rpm in Comfort mode, and auto shifting in Sport mode will only take you to 5th gear, but you can manually shift to 6th in Sport and at freeway speeds it’s spinning a little above 2000 rpm. I get 35-36 mpg (U.S. gallons) on longer drives so the range is well over 300 miles and maybe close to 400.

In comfort mode at steady speed the batteries last quite a ways. I switch to Sport for a bit to recharge when needed. I have gone 460 miles and still had a bit of gas left. I would plug in at work and fill tank for security... My overall mpg is 57.

Thanks I appreciate the info. I see a lot of people puting miles on them but I haven’t seen to many people do 80mph for a long distance. I know the Prius is great for committing but it’s just a gas car on the highway especially at 80mph.

The I8 does great in comfort or eco pro. In sport even manual shifting into 6th also gets decent highway mileage. I noticed in the mountains with frequent up/down hill the Regen braking downhill actually makes it quite efficient. I played around a bit with it on the highway @70mph downhill put it into Edrive only let it charge up on the downhill. I would say it regens enough to get you at best half way up an equal length/grade hill. I have gotten over 400 miles on 10 gallons of gas quite often with a few miles to spare. However @ 80+ I do notice the milage does drop to say 33-35 mpg if you are on fairly flat terrain and constantly @80mph+. Then engine is running 2300+rpm

I think the OP is misunderstanding the i8. The i8 will travel all day long at 80mph. Just stop and refuel when you run low on gas like any other car. You should be able to travel 350-400 miles on a full 11 gallon tank.
The hybrid electric assist will allow you to travel 12-15 miles on a pre LCI car on battery alone. The electric assist is meant to do just that “assist.” It makes the car perform and accelerate like it has a much larger ICE engine without using all the fuel associated with having a larger engine. The i8 is an extremely comfortable road car and is one of very few cars that has multiple personalities. Just drop it in sport and it becomes a completely different vehicle or run a quick trip to the grocery store on battery alone.
