You have pizza often Sedan, do you hanker for something else in between.
I oscillate between [good] pizza and burgers from hole-in-the-wall joints. The burgers must have bacon and be sans cheese. I'm picky! Lol!

Since I'm taking tomorrow off, today is my kickoff……so that means pizza will be devoured sometime between 2pm and 6am.

I cracked up laughing. Donuts aren't really my thing. I'm the wrong cop to ask. I am, however, a gummy bear aficionado.

You should give 19th Street Pizzeria a try sometime. Better than average. They deliver but you might be just a little too far for them. I'm just down the street and will be having it today.

An approach to speeding / driving I think would be a monumental overhaul effort but well worth it in the end (figure ~10 years for full data on adoption / effects):

1. Tiered license system. For both motorcycles and cars / trucks / SUVs. You get the bottom tier license, you're stuck with anything under [hp / weight ratio limit or just hp limit]. 2nd tier gets you most stuff. 3rd tier gets you "performance" cars / trim packages. 4th tier gets you the sports cars / top of the line stuff. Similar with motorcycles - 300cc and under; 301cc - 750cc; 751cc - 1000cc; 1000cc+. Each tier comes with progressively more training requirements and stringent testing, but with an appropriate reduction in insurance costs, tickets, etc (along with granting you the ability to purchase the vehicle to begin with).

2. More frequent / stringent licensing in general. You get a DUI where you total your car, 3 others, half a storefront, a manhole cover somehow, and a traffic light? Buh bye license for ohhhhh, 10 years? Injure + kill someone and you're at fault? Lose your license for 2x the equivalent of how long you'd spend in jail for homicide - IF you don't go to jail for it. No buying it back either. Get caught riding dirty after the fact? Do not pass go, do not collect $200, right back to jail you go. License testing revamped to include more reversing, parking, parallel parking, merging, etc - and must be in an appropriate vehicle for the tier you're testing for. So if you know you're gonna go out and buy a turbo 'busa, no borrowing your girlfriend's moped for the keyhole test. Oh, and you have to get a truck / SUV qualifier kinda like your M1 is additional to your C license, or various commercial certs. So for those of you taking the license test in your mom's Civic and then buying an Escalade...no more of that either. License recertification - including full retesting - every 10 years for bottom tier, 8 years for mid tier, and 3-5 years for top / performance tiers.

3. Stiffer penalties, tied to, say, your car's value or your income, for various offenses. A speeding fine that costs $500 and an insurance bump is huge for someone making $50k a year. It's a "have my secretary pay my fine" for someone making $500k / year. It's not even a deterrent at that point. But if a reckless + speeding ticket costs, say, 20% of your car's value, and you have a Ferrari, well, that's gonna sting a lot more. (For example, I know someone clearing well into the 6 figures whose insurance was over $450 / month until recently. For one car. And it wasn't even an expensive luxury car, just American muscle.)

Of course, this is all mostly a pipe dream, and the legislation for it would probably end up so full of holes and exemptions as to be toothless, but hey...it'd probably be pretty damn effective at improving safety on the roads over time, to the point where speed limits would be of far lesser concern and we could work on removing them on most freeways...
I've argued a close variation of this for years. In fact back in the 80's I wrote a paper on it in a college writing project on "persuasive writing". They liked the paper but during our discussion one of the other students didn't think it would work because it features an element of "classism" based on ability to pay. I argued the advanced requirement of training investment should be the most dominant filter but they seemed to think any advanced fee structure would make is classist by default. It was an interesting discussion at the time.

Well in that case I'll be happy to take it off your hands once the new Gran Turismo drops....

You can make a "classist" argument for damn near anything. And it will have varying degrees of merit. It's a weak argument IMO. I don't want to muck up this thread with politics though.

To their point though -
  • Merely having a car requires $$$ (purchase price)
  • insurance requires additional $$$ - and insuring cheaper cars that are crashed more often can be more expensive than insuring a far more expensive car that rarely crashes / gets stolen or vandalized
  • training requires $$$
  • getting to and from the DMV requires $$$
  • even just using the car requires $$$ (tires, gas, oil, maintenance)
  • registration requires $$$
  • bridge tolls
  • carpool lane tolls
  • toll road use
  • etc

The entire concept of cars and ownership is classist if you want to make that argument. They need to think bigger and more critically and get past the knee-jerk "I have no idea what else to say so I'm going to try to shut this down with a 'win' button statement".

At a certain point we've decided collectively (or at least, our esteemed representatives have) that it's still worth the downside and an essential part of life. There are nearly 287 million cars in the USA, with a population of 331 million.

331-287 = 44 million.

There are 78 million children in the USA (defined as 17 or under).

Safe to say, it seems like classism for the costs of car ownership is a null argument, as pretty much everyone has at least one or more cars per household. And yeah yeah yeah some families may have one whereas another family have 8 cars and that's gonna skew things a bit but basically it holds up that classism is not a barrier of entry to car ownership aside from specific subsets like luxury brands / supercars / etc.

And at the end of the day, the additional revenue generated by the people able and willing to jump through the extra hoops can subsidize those who have a need for a vehicle but not the means to pay for the extra training. I'd also wager that those extra hoops - even subsidized - might make certain demographics (low income, undocumented immigrants, etc) far more likely to drive more carefully, thus further improving safety overall and reducing likelihood of hit and run accidents and such. Win / Win for all involved.

Was an avid video game player since Pong in the 70s. Had so many different machines I can't remember them all. Frequented all night arcades while I kept a full daytime job. Was a real addict! My last machines were PS2 and XBOX. I think the internet took it's place for me. I know technology has advanced like crazy since then. I still look and am interested in the new stuff, but will probably never play again. Just not my thing anymore.

PS - Loved Gran Turismo and have a soft spot for Nintendo.

Same here!!! My last two systems were PS2 and XBOX 360. I still have my Sega Saturn with a few choice titles. Colecovision, Atari 2600 & Atari 5200 were the first systems I ever owned and I've owned every game system up until the PS2 and 360 (…e.g…Neo Geo, Turbographx 16, etc. etc.).

P.S. I, too, have a soft spot for Nintendo. I play my gf's son's Switch occasionally.

I had a Sega Saturn. It is an awesome system, loved it! Also had Colecovision, 2600 and 5200. Intellivision, not great, Vectrex, was great, so many more.

You and I shared a lot of them, even though I'm sure our age is quite different. Brother from another mother.
