▀▄ eas | Quidzel Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) retrofit for i3 now available

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com

We are happy to announce the release of Quidzel Traffic Jam Assist Modules (TJA) for i3 are in stock and ready for installation or shipping.

BMW Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) is a driver aid system that performs lane keeping along with adaptive cruise control in limited scenarios, specifically highway traffic situations where the system is adept at following the car ahead at low to medium speeds, controlling steering, accelerator, and braking inputs. However, BMW has not offered this feature in the US market until just recently, even though many recent models with active cruise control already have the software and most of the hardware required. Specifically, BMW adds a capacitive steering wheel, sensor module, and wiring that is used to detect hands on the steering wheel and presume that if the driver’s hands are on the wheel, the driver is in control of the vehicle. Some people have bought the steering wheel & other hardware costing up to $1000 and successfully retrofitted their USA cars with TJA by coding the system modules to include option 5AR. The hardware isn’t commonly available in the USA, and requires airbag removal, etc.

The Quidzel Hands On Detection test emulator communicates with the car as if you had retrofitted the capacitive steering wheel. This small module installs in about 2-3 minutes, allows you to test the TJA functionality by coding the car for the new functionality, and is fully reversible. It is easiest to apply the code as a one-shot VO FA change across all the modules, as different cars have different modules. The initial hurdle to coding your car is a little steep, so you might ask for some help from someone advertising BMW retrofit coding services.

It must be said that you must remain attentive and in control of the car. You are responsible to monitor and correct your car’s driving – you will find that TJA is not autonomous driving and its technical ability is limited. To take advantage of this feature, you already must have active cruise control and are aware of its limitations – this adds steering assistance/control with similar limitations. Our HOD test emulator emulates the capacitance measurement, enabling BMW Traffic Jam Assist on your BMW vehicle with ACC (option code 5AT).

DIY: Quidzel TJA retrofit

Test Subject - 2017 BMW i3 REx

Installation

Turn steering wheel 90 degrees counter-clockwise

Remove screw behind multi-function button panel. Might be Torx or Hex, in our case it was Hex.

remove Multi Function Button panel from steering wheel, slides out from underneath airbag assembly.

Locate 3PIN connector to multi function button panel

Unplug 3PIN connector to multi function button panel, set aside

Quidzel TJA retrofit module, note male/female ends of connectors

Plug TJA module into steering wheel harness

Plug other end of TJA module into Multi Function Button panel

Tuck module away into steering wheel, away from any moving parts

Replace Multi Function button panel

Fasten Multi Function Button Panel with screw, You're finished!

Coding

Coding is required for the module to communicate with the vehicle properly. App-based programs like iCarly or Bimmercode will not work for this retrofit. If you are not familiar with this area, please consult with professional shop or independent. BMW Dealerships cannot retrofit this for you.

Instructions
1. Add Option 5AR to Vehicle Order (VO)
2. Code Entire Car

Optional: Raise Threshold for TJA Speed
By default, TJA is capped at ~35mph, this can be increased slightly in eSys. Note speeds higher than 45MPH can be a bit jerky on the steering wheel

SAS module
SAS/3000/LDM_STA_Einschraenkung - set to "keine Einschraenkung"

To disable TJA Max Speed
SAS/3000/LDM_QalcgRel_v_Tacho_aktiv_kmh - change hex value to "63" (0x63 = 99 in decimal = 99kmh). You can change hex value to whatever you want to. Default setting is 60KMH.

SAS/3000/LDM_QalcgRel_v_Tacho_aktiv_mph - change hex value to "3E" (0x3E = 62 in decimal = 62mph). You can change hex value to whatever you want to. Default setting is 35MPH.

Operation

In order for the steering wheel to appear, the right conditions must be met:

- TJA must be turned on
- Driving on a street or freeway with fully visible lane markers
- A vehicle must be in front of you for your car to follow
- You must be driving no faster than the speed you programmed for TJA. By default, 35MPH or less (unless threshold is increased by coding).

Enjoy!

What is the price with your shop also doing the coding update, as I'd come out week of the 19th (this month)

It appears that at least in the PNW assisted cruse is not even an option on the 2018 i3.

I'm interested as well. I can VO code the car myself and can pick up locally from Anaheim.

will this void BMW warranty?

I have a used 2014 i3 and the factory warranty is no longer valid but the battery warranty (8 yrs / 100k miles) is still active. Not sure if I install the "BMW Traffic Jam Assist (TJA)" will void all future possible factory warranty and recall services.

Unless BMW is specifically looking for a cruise control related problem or issue (highly unlikely), they won't even know the module is installed.

additional parameters for TJA coding

I'm curious if anyone has looked at the other parameters under the TJA in Esys to see if any of them can be translated easily from the original German.

It would be interesting to know if there were other "tuning" of the lane-keeping that could be done to make it less like a "ping-pong" at higher speeds.

It should be theoretically possible to manipulate parameters if there's a standard PID loop in operation. Since the algorithm is optimized now for low-speed, it might also be possible to do it for higher speeds (at the expense of low-speed tuning.)

This would of-course would involve more potential risk. But my limited experience with TJA up to 55 MPH has shown that adding DAMPING has helped the response, and reduced over-correction.

What do you mean by adding damping?

Does anybody know if new update for Bimmercode that has been released yesterday include SAS module??

Bimmercode cannot VO code, cannot use it to retrofit the module.
