Maps/Navgation Directions in Instrument Cluster and HUD

As far as iDrive 8.5 11/2023 version goes:
1. After watching some YouTube videos and playing with the iDrive, I was able to get a non-default BMW map show in the instrument cluster. The only way to do this is to open Apple Maps in Apple CarPay and start navigating to some destination at which point Apple Maps show up in the instrument cluster with your route showing in green. The map is not as detailed as in the control display but still much better than the default BMW map which just shows street outline. This only works with Apple Maps and only when navigating to a destination. If one switches to something other than Apple Maps or stops navigating in Apple Maps, the map in the instrument cluster goes back to the default BMW street outline map. Can someone confirm that that's how thing are currently suppose work? What additional map instrument cluster features does iOS 17.4 update bring (I am still on 17.1.1) except the new configuration button?

"In iOS 17.4, with supported CarPlay vehicles, Apple Maps will present a new instrument cluster experience with information about upcoming maneuvers. Users will be able to swap the desired display type between the main and instrument cluster screen by tapping the map configuration button on the upper right of the Maps main screen."

2. Which maps should show up in the HUD - not just the turns/exits but a rectangle with street outlines? I was only able to get BMW maps to show there. I remember in iDrive 7 Apple Maps also showed up in the HUD.

What you describe is exactly how mine works. I have not paid attention to any iOS 17.4 differences.

I can only get the native BMW nav map view to appear in the HUD.

So, I played around with navigating using BMW nav and Apple CarPlay using Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Waze and having standard view in the HUD. Turn by turn directional arrows are shown in the HUD for BMW nav and Apple Maps. In addition to that, part of the map with the relevant intersection/exit shows up in the HUD for BMW nav only. Nothing is shown in the HUD for Google Maps and Waze. Is that how it supposed to work?

Yes. Currently, only Apple Maps supports dual screen projection. This means that AM can push nav content to the HUD and instrument cluster.

Apple Maps does not seem able to push the map view to the HUD, but it can push it to the instrument cluster.

Yes but for some reason I thought that Apple Maps were shown in the HUD on my previously leased 2021 X5 with iDrive 7. I vaguely recall how people got excited in the G05 forum that Apple Maps became available in the HUD but looking back at older posts there I now realized that it was only turn by turn arrows and not the full map.
