My panel started making the same noise in cold as well. Thought it was roof then debugged it with help of this thread. I also have the v4 part so presumably can get it swapped for v5.

Wondering if there’s any first or third party options like just putting a netting there instead?

Right now I just have the shelf panel removed and on the back seat until needed or swapped.

Need to go to dealer for software update anyway. Won’t make it til March though given my schedule.

In addition to the already mentioned parcel shelf the sound is also known to come from the D pillar plastic covers right above the parcel shelf. Solution is to remove the D pillar pieces, line inside with felt tape, and re-attach. Works like a charm and BMW can do it under warranty of course.

It is not the glass roof.

Carnook: do you happen to have a work order with this info that can be shared? These noises are driving me crazy and it would be great to show my service center what others have done that has been effective. Also, to be clear, you are not referring to the plastic covers above the seatbelts, correct?

Sorry I'm traveling and don't have my paperwork/records with me.

You are right, I am not referring to the flat plastic covers above the seatbelts. On each D pillar there is an upright panel running front to back in the middle of the pillar. I found a picture. It's the panel his thumb is touching.

My tech removed the panels, sound went away, applied felt tape to prevent plastic touching plastic... problem solved. Hope this helps!

Please read my post about how I greased up the parcel shelf and the noise went 100% away and has been over a week with silent driving! We did both our iX, and this worked perfectly on two iX.

Originally i thought this was the sunroof. It turned out it was the rear trunk cover. I reseated it, and the creaking stopped. The sound was reverberating off the sunroof behind me and made it sound like a sunroof creak.

I can 100% vouch that this was the cause for me as well, and i fixed it the same way.

Our solve - felt tape around poorly seated screw

So, for us the solve was this screw, which is seated on the right hand side of the tailgate, which is holding the rear parcel shelf. these screws even when tight are slightly movable by design. On the right hand side the tailgate plastic cover would rub against the screw when it's cold. And the parcel shelf would make the sound louder and worse. Adding a bit of felt tape around the screw solved the problem.

Thanks Snowbird_UT. Both of my shelves are of the 05 series so the shelf replacements does not seem to be the fix. How did you determine that it was the right post/screw? And did you remove it, put felt tape behind it, replace it and put something over it too?

I’ve been hearing it now. Normal driving conditions, and southern California weather.

For my creaking, I have tried with the parcel shelf in and out and the tailgate shelf in and out. I only hear the creaking with the parcel shelf in. It does not matter in may case if the tailgate shelf is in or not. Both of my shelves are version 05.

So I'm running with the parcel shelf as the source and will apply felt tape to it this weekend.

Do you know how to remove that panel? I tried but it seems to be held in place by the lower bigger panel...

Paladin1 : apologies for the slow response. the right hand side screw would hit the plastic and make a clacking sounds when wiggling it. Those screws are seated in a flexible/wiggly base on purpose, I guess. Ours, on the right hand side, does not sit fully in the center of the hole in the plastic trim.

I think that iX parcel shelf is one of the worst design pieces ever. It is flimsy and useless with no way to stow it away inside the vehicle.
