Free EA charging for 1 car with 2 drivers

I searched through the EA enrollment threads and couldn’t find anything, but apologies if this has already been answered.

I set up my EA free charging access through the myBMW app and completed my first charging session today with everything going smoothly / no issues.

I’m the primary driver of the car, but my wife also drives it and has her own profile / myBMW account.

Is there any way for her to also access the EA free 30 minute charging sessions using her account? I don’t think she’ll need to charge the car at a public charger very often, but it would be handy to have and it seems like it’s something that should be possible given the free charging offer is specific to the car rather than to a person.

Actually it is specific to a person via your EA account - plus VIN. The easiest thing would be for her to use your EA account (through your MyBMW profile) to charge since she does it infrequently. One per car/customer, AFAIK. That's one of the problems, among many, with porting over your EA account to MyBMW. The EA app is unrelated to setting up and driving your car - anyone with the app on their phone can use your plan if they sign in with your credentials. Linked to MyBMW, you have integrated the free charging plan with your profile (and key fob), and you no longer have access to the plan through their app - one or the other. It might work with her just signing in to MyBMW on her phone with your credentials, but unknown if it will work if she's driving the car under her profile. Will be interesting to see if it works.

Thanks.

Her profile is linked to her BMW ID which is what her app is signed into, and I’d rather not mess with that to find a workaround.

It’s a bummer that it doesn’t just work for anyone driving the car, but not really a big inconvenience for us.

The other option is to get EA to restore your account, but having already used it via MyBMW that might be difficult or impossible. A known issue, but several, including me, have reset their EA account:

I have the same situation with my wife and that’s why we never connected EA to MyBMW app. She’s just logged into my EA account.

Another option if it’s not too annoying is that you can just remote start the EA station with your app for her.

Has this actually worked for you?
I think I tried to do this but the app knew that I was not at the charger location and wouldn't let me do it. This is using the EA app.

You’re right. I guess we live close enough to the EA charger I’m trying to remote start for it to let me, but I guess it won’t start if I’m too far. Only reliable way is to disconnect the EA account from MyBMW and just run EA app with same login on multiple devices.

If you want a workaround without switching the account from MyBMW to EA app, you can try to add the plan's pass to the Wallet app, and then share the pass with the other driver. Not all EA charging stations support the pass in the Wallet app so it may not work at all places.

I've used chargers that are newly activated that don't show up on either the BMW app nor even EA's!!! In this case its a "manual charge" so to speak- call up EA, ID the charger, give them your name (or your spouses) & last 8 digits of VIN. I would try that, just say its not showing on your app. They don't know?

FYI, I haven’t used a public charger yet in the four months I’ve had my vehicle, so I went ahead and rolled the dice and connected my BMW and Electrify America accounts together. I did not have any issues.

FWIW, my co-owner/significant other/GF confirmed it can be done by "simply" calling in to EA and having them set up the charge manually. In fact, they even waived the 30 minute limitation for her! It may sound like a hassle to go through but since the charger we use isn't listed as "on line" yet we have to call in anyway to get it to work!

Hi, thanks for the detailed, visual guide. i am using the digital key plus with android phone and i don't seem to have that "payment and wallet" option, rather it's just "payment" and no wallet section like you do. is this because it's AOS instead of iOS, do you think?

thanks.

Not sure if anyone is still looking for any answers regarding this, but with Plug n Charge it doesn’t matter who plugs the iX into an EA charging station. As long as there is a connection, my credit card (I’m the primary driver and EA account holder) gets charged (holding deposit only) and the charging begins. My partner charges at EA for free with no issues when I’m out of the country.

I'm still waiting for EA and BMW to activate the account. Does Plug n Charge involve doing something beyond that?

Nope, it should literally just allow you to plug and charge, once your account is activated and your credit card is linked. Mine took a couple of days to be activated, it was pretty quick.

For Plug ‘n Charge the certificate has to be downloaded to the vehicle by EA. You need to contact EA to have them do that.

It took 3 emails from me to EA to finally get someone knowledgeable enough to understand what I was asking, which was for the EA certificate to be sent to the car.

Keep trying as BMW can’t do this, only EA.
