Anyone choose eDrive40 over M50 based on performance?
Trying to decide between M50 and eDrive40, but not for cost or range reasons. Seeing some suggest they prefer the E40 experience (RWD, smoother throttle, etc) over M50 and wondering if anyone else has come to that same conclusion?

It was M50 or nothing for me even before I drove them.
Can't get 20" wheels, carbon fiber trim and some other things on the eDrive40.

If you're going to fully spec an e40 no point, might as well go M50, price difference is small
You're not losing any comfort with the M50 over the 40 anyway |

Rwd vs awd maybe a conversation, but smooth throttle? Please test drive one and come back with a review on the throttle.

Test drive both. Figure out what suits your life style better.
eDrive40 will be the more practical car. Keep you closer to the speed limit (avoiding speeding tickets) and longer wear from your tires. It'll be plenty fast to zoom around town. I chose the M50. I simply enjoy the additional torque and the feeling of being pushed into my seat with a sub 4 sec 0-60 car. |

As advised, try both. My wife and I did and both of us agreed it was the M50 for us. The main reason was that we prefer AWD now as the roads we travel for our commute are poor and in winter untreated which can make life ‘interesting’. Her E46 has a habit of swapping ends if provoked! Wide tyres don’t help.
The ‘shove’ of the M50 might have had a little to do with our choice, but wasn’t the main driver……..honest it wasn’t |

The car mags are all about some ephemeral feeling on track. Sure, if I wanted real wheel drive dynamics, I'd get a rear wheel drive car. In fact, I have one, an FRS, and it's a blast. 4/5 of our cars are AWD, though, because in the real world, I constantly encounter loose surfaces. Every single time I pull out of the pebble magnet that is my driveway, my FRS skids at least a little bit, unless I sacrifice the clutch.
In the real world, even with the same power, AWD is just faster coming out of corners. |

If $ and range not an issue, the 50 is the way to go, AWD and faster than a M3! In our case we did not need another car and the only way to get approval from the Mrs was to have the 7500 BMW credit on the 35 model. I actually just texted the dealership and said the only regret was it was not a 50.

You’ll have to drive both now that they are somewhat available and see which one works for you. If you’re used to a sub 5 second car (0-60mph), the eDrive40 will feel slow to you. I choose the M50 given the performance and love the stability of the electric xDrive. The car just goes, there’s no drama. |

To me; I prefer the eDrive40. I like the longer range and the slightly better steering feel that AWD tends to mask. In the end, the way we spec'd ours the price difference between it and an M50 similarly optioned, was about $8,000. If going fast was a priority, I wouldn't buy an EV. Straight line they're impressive, otherwise, not so much. I have a 911 that'll clean an M50's clock in a straight line and will seriously embarrass it if the road turns at all. That's not why I bought the EV BMW. The BMW is my DD, not a toy.

E40 advantages compared to M50 , to me, are price, availability, driving feel, range, weight, RWD ( no front wheels heavy torque steering)
As a DD is great, and it does not feel slow compared to an M340 which is a sub 4 second 0 to 60 car. I could have either and I chose to keep the E40 |
