2023 I4 M50 Range Calculations

I have a 2023 I4 M50 with 19" wheels. I've driven it about 1500 miles. I have been driving almost exclusively in eco pro mode until I understand what the range is. I drive very conservatively and always get between 3.5 and 4 miles per kWHr. Nevertheless, the range prediction is never even equal to the EPA range of 270 miles. It usually predicts 220 miles at best. Does anyone have a user experience where you regularly see predictions equivalent to the EPA range when fully charged.

note: I usually charge to 80% and then take the range prediction and divide it by 0.8 to get the equivalent full charge range.

Range estimate when fully charged has nothing to do with EPA range. One is a measured range. One is estimated. Drive the car and see how much range you actually get with your 80%.

If you are legit getting between 3.5 and 4 mi per kw, then you are easily beating 220 miles of total range. Useable capacity is 80.7kw so at those averages you are 280-320 miles of range. Which both beat the epa with 19” wheels.

As an aside, I don’t get why people are so fixated on the guess that is the range number. I get it if you are on a trip and need to reach a specific charger or something, but day to day, who cares. Drive the car and enjoy it.

My 2022 i4 M50, range estimation at 100% fully charged, almost always showed 290-300+

Our son's 2023 i4 e40 with the same size battery, usually shows 200 miles max at 100% charged.

I'm aware of the relationship (or lack of relationship) between the epa number and the range estimate the car displays each day. The question was about why the range estimate is always so far off and always low. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Engineers like to understand how machines work. The range estimation algorithm doesn't seem to work since it doesn't even seem to take into account the 3.5-4 m/kWh actuals when it predicts the range. Thanks for taking the time to respond yesterday.

How many miles have you put on the car? If you take a long trip averaging 3.5 m/kwh the range estimate will definitely adjust.

I don't even pay attention to the range estimate. I only look at the amount of charge remaining. That's the number that matters.

I am guessing that bmw may be carrying over some code from ICE cars. Where the range meter there is mpg from your last bit of driving multiplied by your fuel remaining. So in this case, you may be averaging 3.5-4 but the last stretch before charge only had 2.5 (example) and thus when you turn the car on it says less range than you expect. I know with my car I can get in and the range will say one number and then after 5 min of driving it is something else. Sometimes higher sometimes much lower. Or if I go down a grade on the freeway for awhile the range will jump up.

It’s adjusting based on how you drive. Doesn’t mean your car has something wrong or your range has disappeared.

I agree with the others and that the guessometer will adjust based on driving. Here is an example of an estimate after charging to 84% on my trip to Las Vegas from San Diego. It would be nice to have 267 miles of range at 84%. This would mean a range total range of ~317 miles if my math is correct.

I don't think I have ever achieved 200 miles of charge on a full charge on my M50. I have 19" Pirelli Pzero summer tires. Yesterday at 87% charge, it was showing 137 miles of range. Compared to the i3, this car is much thirstier with a life time average of 2.3 mi/kWh over 5800 miles. However, when I hit the freeway, at 75mph, the car has shown over 200 miles of predicted range. But in town, the range quickly goes down.

I’m only getting around 290km for a full charge at 100%. It’s probably still of the winter here in Toronto and Thule roof box I have but it’s much less than advertised.

I’m averaging 2.4mi/kwh on 20” rims driving very conservatively. Had an ix3 previously which I could easily average 3.2+

I’m getting around advertised at 100% about 220 - 230.

At 80% I get around 160 - 180.

I have the 20” wheels.

We just recently took delivery of a 2023 M50 on 19" shoes. Fewer than 100 miles on it and still on the initial charge from the dealership (delivered around 97% charge with about 11 miles on the ODO). Guess-o-meter has been all over the place and certainly adapts (at times, we've ended a drive with more miles remaining than what we started with). I'll keep an eye on and try to report back what our actual mileage is when we get down to 10% or so and need to charge. At first glance, lots of great performance data available in the My BMW app.

From my experience on a couple of long motorway runs, then 250miles is realistic without hypermileing. 3-3.4khw seems very attainable. The range usually shows less.....
