My son came home with 2 yesterday. He was over helping gpa clean out the garage. Now, neither has any air pressure, both have lots of rust to match the 2 we already have.

Question though: How much would one spend on a vintage (80's probably) Trek? The rear sprocket broke during cleaning and 2 spokes now have nowhere to live. I'm worried the kid has never ridden on pizza cutters, he used to mountain bikes. His buddies love riding and he went a few times, but can't keep up with a bike that only pedals in 4th gear.

I told him take all 4 to a shop and get an estimate to get them running: tubes, tires, derailer/brake adjustments, some LOObrication.

There is at least a trifecta of F8s on the board. Nice!

I wouldn't spend more than $50 really. Depending on model and condition though.

So if spokes are flopping loose it wasn't the sprocket that broke it was the hub. You'll need a new rear wheel. Old bikes are like old BMWs, if you can't do the work yourself they're not worth it. You can find nice shape fully working 80's road bikes for $150-$200 all day long. I once bought a TREK full carbon bike with Sante ($$) group for $175. Don't spend a lot at the bike shop for this one.

I love mine too. However, I am suffering from a lower back spine misalignment and my orthopedic said it is getting worse. The cycling position is making it worse especially when I am in the drops or aero bar. I plan to keep my hybrid as I sit more upright and have less pain. It is a difficult decision as I have been riding road bikes for 47 years but at 73 I cant afford to endanger my health. My Domane is loaded with top shelf CF, Ultegra 11 speed Di2, power pedals, aero bar with bar end shifters, Aeolus 3 CF wheels etc. I won't have any problem selling it.
I also have a Trek hybrid which I can ride on our trails unless things get worse with my health.

So sorry to hear that Ray. You've been riding 4 years longer than i've been alive and I certainly hope to be able to ride in to my 70s as well. Your riding over the past few years has likely been a huge inspiration to many. I hope the hybrid provides many years of enjoyment doing what you love.

I'm so sorry my friend .I wish you a speedy recovery ASAP .
Advice : Take a warm water bath everyday and stay in the water for 15-20 minutes.

Thanks for the well wishes and advice. Cyclists have a special camaraderie among them. My bike shop owner is going to work with me to try find a good bike geometry which may allow me to ride a little longer. A recumbent is out of the question as they sit too low and with drivers today you need to be more visible.

The only area I saw was in members classifieds under non automotive. Once I decide what I want to sell it for I will post it on here.

I just bought my first road bike...2014 felt z100. It is entry level (I think MSRP is around $800) and I picked it up used for $300. If I really get into it I will upgrade to carbon, etc...plus I need to lose about 20 lbs, think that will make me much faster than a carbon bike I am going on a longish ride (for me) every weekend, around 20 miles. Baby steps...

Very wise to start out slow then gradually work up to longer rides and increased fitness. My first road bike was a Schwinn Varsity in 1971, paid $50 for it and rode a century on it after 4-5 months. Thought I was going to die. I walked the last mile which was uphill. I was wasted. A Felt is a good bike. Good Luck.

So, we took in 4 bikes, and are fixing 2 of them. The TREK is an aluminum 1500, needs a new cup on the rear, and a bit of TLC. Shop says we can get out for under $200, so the kid is going for it (with his money)

The other little BMX bike needs some new shoes, in for about $40 then I already have someone who needs it for a raffle. Paying it forward so the TREK ends up good for my son.

The best of the remaining 2 needs about $175 worth of tune-up. My son is learning to be nice, so he notified 2 buddies who are a lot taller than he and can sit this one, that he will give to them if they take it in to get fixed.

The last one will end up on a scrap truck soon. . .

The correct answer is not enough. Always N+1

Currently have 2 MTB, 1 Road, 1 Beach Cruiser and too many kids bikes to count. I have reduced my MTB count significantly from the 5 that I used to have.

Took my first bike ride today after my crash 1 month ago. It was only 16 miles and I rode my hybrid as it has front shocks. Ribs are still a little tender but it felt good to get out and ride.
