OBD reader and tool for IX
Hi, I am wondering what is the best bluetooth / wifi obd reader to use with the IX and best app for displaying fault codes and battery status etc.
Thanks in advance |

I can only say that my trusty old OBDLink MX+ does not work with the iX.
EDIT: OBDLink MX+ works with the right profile.

hugo_nz is the coding guru around here, but the short answer is that coding on iD8 appears to be a non-starter, at least for now. The technical New Jersey term is "fuggedaboutit."

I'm just looking to get a read on the battery temperature and maybe a few other readings. I also have an OBD-ethernet cable but the OBDLink MX+ is not able to communicate with the car so I hope to find an app that can pull a few pieces of data.

I can confirm both "Vgate iCar Pro Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE)" and "Veepeak OBDCheck BLE+ Bluetooth 4.0" work with the CarScanner app for the iX (need to select iX3 in the app).

I doubt that BMW would limit the reading of fault codes since they are universal and readable by any number of tools and devices.
Coding on the other hand is proprietary to BMW and they can lock that down as they wish. With the 03/23 software update iDrive moves to secure coding 2.0 which means any DIY coding is out of the window. As it stands the only module that can be coded after this update is the RAM, but BMW will likely move that to 2.0 at some point too.

I can confirm that the iX50 has the same information:
Interestingly, the TPMS screen on the M60 shows tire temp in addition to the tire pressure, where on my iX50 it does not (US spec), so there could be some other variations between the two models. |

Tire temp should be there for the xDrive50's too but it may not be 'coded' to display it.
The motor temp in the sport displays doesn't seem as useful as knowing the battery temperature for charging. Hopefully, BMW will expose this for those of us who are interested. In the meantime, I've ordered a new OBD2 reader to try.

So I ordered a new ODB2 adapter and still ran into issues. So I tried Paladin1 's suggestion and selected the iX3 profile and boom, Car Scanner worked with the OBDLink MX+ on the iX

Which apps and what profile are you using on the app? As I mentioned above, I was able to get the adapter to talk to the ECU's by using an iX3 profile rather than a default BMW profile.

Very useful thread. Thanks all for your posts. Wondering since now the new iX is using 8.5, is there any way to find out battery temp just from the car itself (not coding), or might this be a good use for a OBD2.
I see Veepeak 4.0 BLE + works with CarPlay but as some of you have shared might still need to choose the i3 seeing — but maybe 8.5 has fixed that? Any further thoughts or recommendations on usefulness re an OBD working either just for battery temp, and/or especially in combination with the ABRP app being helpful. TU (as you can tell, I’ve got a lot to learn in this area). |
