New feature found in the connected drive store
I found a new feature in the ConnectedDrive store; it’s called Traffic camera Information.
What’s this for? Does anyone know? |

Not really new. Been available for a while. Basically does exactly what it says there. Alerts you to nearby traffic cameras (red light cameras, speed cameras). Should be able to do a free trial to see if you like it.

Interesting. I didn't know about it.
Does it use crowd sourcing for like Waze and Apple Maps? That may make it worthwhile. Or just the known stationary cameras mostly at traffic lights (at least in Los Angeles)? |

There’s nowhere in the car to report a new or missing camera. New ones have been quite quick to appear, however there appear to be lots missing, at least in the UK.

It could be useful for someone worried about getting a ticket, but because the only option they have is a yearly subscription, they can shove it where the sun don't shine. It feels like they just want to get customers used to the idea by starting with something small (30$ a year is insignificant) and before you know it, your car will be a microtransaction hub first and transportation device second. |

My 60 came with a free trial to this service. Everything else was included as part of the deal but BMW spams me all the time about renewing the traffic camera service. I never used it and I don’t care.

It's pretty useless where I live. This should be a standard, included feature as I don't see a lot of people paying for this in the US where speeds won't adjust automatically.

I like it as you get warnings in the HUD regardless of active navigation or not. It has been very accurate in my country so far. I see it as a rather cheap insurance vs a speeding ticket if you miss a stationary camera. Feature 20 USD/12 months, speeding ticket 120-400 USD and worst case license suspended for a few months.

Not as surprised as I was when I first took my iX to the Netherlands last year to discover that the Dutch also don’t permit it. Pop up notification in the iX advises the feature isn’t permitted the moment you cross the border. The reason I was surprised was I was sure, in 2022 that the EU had a mandate that all new cars should have automatic speed limit adoption. Perhaps they didn’t push through with it. |

I do not know what you mean by "automatic speed limiter", but automatically changing your speed to the posted limit is not available in the US. Please reference your vehicle or your owner's manual. You can set your vehicle to either alert you when the speed limit changes, or to ignore the changes. You cannot set the car to automatically adopt the speed limits. And you wouldn't want to because the vehicle is extremely inaccurate when it comes to reading speed limit signs. It's wrong half the time.

In the US BMW traffic camera information is not as nearly as good as the speed and red light cameras shown in Waze. At least, that’s what I saw when I tried this ConnectedDrive feature a year or so ago.

Over here, the signs are read pretty well. Much better in the iX that my previous 5 Series (2018). When driving in Germany/Nethelands and that neck of the woods, the sign reading is even better as it also captures times of day. For example, in NL, motorway speeds during the day are limited to 100km/h and overnight, 130km/h. These signs all have the times stated when they apply and the car is able to read them…and notifies you with a little clock symbol next to the detected limit. I like using the auto speed limit adoption, though as you point out, there are errors, so you do have to keep full attention yourself. |
