Drivetrain response. I'd much rather drive a performance oriented EV than a laggy turbo motor. At least on a daily basis. I save the laggy turbo for the weekends.

It's a personal view, of course, but if I'm buying an EV at a price premium, then I want it to be redesigned from the ground up, like the i vision circular.
It will only look dated if the platform looks dated.

if.you mean less modern, that's open for debate. My E90 still looked good a decade+ later.

Reliability and lower cost of ownership over 10 years. Not as many moving parts.

It's a BMW for the price of a Ford Mustang EV.

This could be the best overall daily driver. I got rid of my M4CS - too high powered for a daily driver to really enjoy without risking your license. I have a non BMW EV now, and EVs are so much more responsive off the line and easier to drive. So a BMW EV should be a home run. SHOULD...

This number is really sticking in my craw. That's nearly 1,000 lbs more than a Model 3 perf, and 400 lbs more than a Polestar 2.

As the M440i Gran Coupe ICE that it's based upon weighs 4180 lbs, sounds about right.

Yes it's heavier than a TM3
It has also been stated by multiple reviewers that it's one of the quietest EV cabins they have been in.

The weight doesn't bother me, because I don't plan on lifting the car. But for reference it weighs about the same as my X5. Meh.

The range isn't an issue since I charge at home. This will be the 4th EV we have leased or owned.

So buy a Tesla Model 3 Performance or Polestar 2. I've driven both and I'm still going the i4 M50 route. Each to their own.

If you want to call it "Just en electric 4 series".

it's quite a bit more, but yes it shares the same platform. So I guess you need to ask yourself what were you expecting?

BMW has made no secret that these are no bespoke chassis for BEV. They will get to that, but I the meantime they still need to make money.

Tesla didn't start as an ICE car manufacturer so it has no transition to make. The 3/4 platform for BMW is a cash cow. You don't take your cow to slaughter unless you have another cow to milk.

yeah, but you can feel the weight.

I drove My Model 3 Performance to the Porsche dealer and drove a base Taycan, a Taycan 4S and a Taycan Turbo then drove off in my Model 3. Back to back to back to back on the same roads. Even though the Taycan Turbo has more power, you still feel the weight. Weight is weight and more power does not make it go away. It shows itself in ride, handling, braking, etc. So while weight doesn't bother me unto itself, and I'm not road tripping my EV, I don't celebrate a car the size of a 4 series that weighs 5,000 lbs.

I've owned two Model 3 Performances and as soon as someone comes up with a car that feels as comparably nimble and actually has decent performance, I'm out. The Taycan has been as close as I've gotten so far but the price / performance is so out of whack I can't justify it. Will the BMW be my Shrek to rescue me from Lord Farquhat? Dunno. Hoping so. But when I see a vehicle the size of a 4 series that weighs 5,000 lbs or more, and then read / watch reviews that all mention that you can feel the weight, it does make me pause.

When did the i3 and i8 come out? And what has BMW done with all that knowledge and tech? Not much, yet. I guess the iX is the first car of the next generation on.

I guess the question is what tech are you looking for?

The TM3 ADAS (FSD) is level 2, no matter what Elon says. It's camera only so it will have performance issues in inclement weather

The i4/iX also uses cameras but has additional Lidar/Radar front facing for object detection. It's also Level 2. BMW has HUD, adaptive regeneration modes, adaptive suspension, driver awareness, Android/iPhone integration, etc.

BMW has embedded ABS and DSC directly into the electric motors.

Anyway, BMW has plenty of new tech in the car.

In the Autogefühl review, Thomas reported on EVs there will be no "M Performance" / "M" distinction.

With the electric vehicles there will be no differentiation between M performance models and true M models. It's just the "M" models. That's a new thing coming here with the EV lineup. So the M50 is kinda then a true M model for them.
Nah, they will have an i4m in the future when there is no M3/M4, guarantee that.

One of the best.
I saw a Taycan up close. I also saw a Lucid.
Too rich for my blood but both gorgeous. M50 is in my wheelhouse.

The i4 is the most familiar looking 4 door sedan EV I've seen on the market. It looks like a traditional ICE car, not obvious it's an EV, and that's a good thing. Range is still an issue, and charging speed and infrastructure are still obstacles to full mass market adoption. With all the big boys playing in the EV segment (BMW, Audi, MB, VW, Chevy and ford) it's inevitable that range and charging will only get better. For now, I'm holding on to ICE but cautiously optimistic about future EV products.

The i3 / i8 tech i was referring to was the massive investment in the carbon body structures that they touted as the next coming. Body tech, not infotainment tech. Doesn't seem to have made much of an impact on the rest of the range. Let's hope the iX is the re-start of this line of design ethos.

The first video at 21:00 are my sentiments exactly about the sound design. I'm sure we'll get there eventually, but since the platform and body of the i4 mimic an ICE so should the artificial engine sound. BMW having Hans Zimmer involved is an excellent marketing strategy though. Personally I don't enjoy the futuristic sounds he's produced and definitely wouldn't want to hear it over and over while on the throttle. Everything else about this car looks very enticing!
