BMW i8 crushed by cement truck in Orange County

This happened on the 73 in Newport Coast this morning. Hope it wasn't anyone here.

Article from OCRegister

NEWPORT BEACH – A cement truck collided with two other vehicles Thursday morning near the 73 freeway offramp and Newport Coast Drive – sending three people to hospitals with life-threatening injuries and closing several lanes.

California Highway Patrol officials said the collision happened at 8:42 a.m. between a gardening truck and a cement truck, causing the cement truck to tip over into southbound Newport Coast Drive lanes.

After the collision, the truck fell onto a blue car, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz said.

Three people were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and one was initially in critical condition, Kurtz said.

A 50-year-old man and 49-year-old woman were taken with moderate traumatic injuries to Mission Hospital and the 50-year-old man who was in critical condition was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, where his condition began to improve, Kurtz said.

Authorities said about 50 cars worth of traffic accumulated at 8:46 a.m. after officials closed down all southbound lanes of Newport Coast Drive near the offramp.

Both Newport Beach and Irvine police officers assisted with traffic direction, as streets in both cities were affected.

It was unclear how long traffic would be blocked, CHP Officer Denise Quesada said.

This is very worrying to me. There are not many protonic blue i8s. I traded wheels with one of the few owners of that color i8 last year. He is from Orange County. I hope it is not him and I also hope everyone got out with minor injuries. But boy does that look bad.

I truly hope that the occupants were not seriously injured and that it was not the person you mentioned.

That looks horrible.

Looking at the license plate it appears this car was licensed around September-October of last year. (For those of you who are not Californians, non special interest license plates are issued sequentially. I have a car newly licensed in October 2015 that starts with 7 and the letter N. This plate starts 7 M.) So I don't think it is Danny. Thank God. But I hope whoever was in it -- and the other vehicles -- makes it OK.

A terrible and tragic accident. Unsettling to learn that it involved a fellow i8 owner and enthusiast. I just hope that everyone involved in this unfortunate incident , especially those three who sustained life-threatening injuries, will fully recover.

Just spoke to Danny. He's fine and just as horrified as we are about that accident.

From the photos it appears that the top was cut away and that the seats are intact. While I would like to know more, it looks as if the carbon fiber held up. (I didn't see all those photos earlier.)

Oh no! The car is materialistic and can be replaced; what matters the most is the driver's and passengers' lives. I truly hope they are ok!

The article wasn't clear but I think it was the gardening truck that collapsed on the i8. A cement truck would weigh many tons and flatten it notwithstanding carbon fiber.

Correction: Others have pointed out it must be the cement truck. I stand corrected. The i8 is amazing!

There are some posts by bystanders to the L.A. Times article, here: http://www.latimes.com/socal/daily-p...225-story.html

This one is significant:

This was actually on Newport Coast drive, at the light of the exit. Story is a little off.

I was there and really want to follow up with the man in critical condition, I believe it's the person in the white little truck, I got him out the car but he wasn't responding to anything I asked him.

Still can't believe the lady in the blue car survived... she was super lucky...
This scene was like straight out of a movie!
