For what it's worth, it looks like the i8 did it best to protect the occupants from a perpindicular/diagonal/vertical accident... hoping the injured the best.

Prayers to the injured. Seat backs stand still, hope those worked.

Not even at UCI medical center? http://www.ucirvinehealth.org/medica...-care-surgery/
Oh thanks for this So they did become level 1 the why didnt they take them there??? Its pretty close from the scene! Again I am sure they will receive the best care wherever they go... They will be in my prayer tonight
Because UCI Medical Center is actually located in the City of Orange, which is further than Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa.

I drive and ride my road bike often on that stretch, it's a moderately steep downgrade at that point.

That's very sad! God bless them and hope everyone makes a full recovery. I was just on that road couple days ago too.

This is really concerning, both passengers of that i8 were hurt badly, puts a major question mark on how safe these i vehicles are with the carbon fiber construction

This is not concerning at al!!

You know how heavy concrete is?? it is about 2.400kg/M3, Cement is about 1.250kg/M3.

I do not know if the truck contained concrete or cement, but both are more than heavy loads.

That concrete/cement truck must be about 40-50 tons, maybe more, so no worries over safety over the carbon constructions I can tell you that.

The fact those people where not instantly killed is proof enough IMO.

Lets hope for the best and wishing for full recovery.

Pretty sure it was the cement truck. You can see in one of the pictures that the gardening "truck" was a little pickup and is still on its wheels. The cement truck is on its side. Wonder how this could have happened - maybe the truck driver tried to avoid an accident and tipped over by turning too hard.

The roof was cut away to get the passengers out. It's next to the car and looks broken, but not shattered. The seats are upright and intact. Clearly, the car's construction saved those people's lives.

That i8 is going to be worth a lot of money to BMW. I bet they spend a fortune to buy it and ship it back to Germany to test. A testament to great engineering and the strength of CFRP.

I bet they offer a replacement car, and grab the wrecked shell for r&d.

Tragic, and it really has nothing to do with it being a somewhat rare BMW.

You're in Calabasas. Is it from Bob Smith? I thought Bob Smith hadn't sold any protonic blue i8s. (Bob Smith is my dealer.)

wow, I figured the driver of the I8 would have been the one in critical condition, that's amazing that they are going to be okay!

imagine explaining that to your insurance company "well you see this cement truck just sort of fell over onto my $150K car and crushed it while I was driving down the highway"

my first reaction was the I8 probably caused it by being an @ss in traffic (stereotypical BMW drivers, ) but it appears that is not the case.

Next thing you know the NTSB will have "cement truck crush" crash testing. i8 would pass.

Glad to hear there were no fatalities - drive safe everyone. Eyes up!
