NEWPORT BEACH – A cement truck collided with two other vehicles Thursday morning near the 73 freeway offramp and Newport Coast Drive – sending three people to hospitals with life-threatening injuries and closing several lanes.

California Highway Patrol officials said the collision happened at 8:42 a.m. between a gardening truck and a cement truck, causing the cement truck to tip over into southbound Newport Coast Drive lanes.

After the collision, the truck fell onto a blue car, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz said.

Three people were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and one was initially in critical condition, Kurtz said.

A 50-year-old man and 49-year-old woman were taken with moderate traumatic injuries to Mission Hospital and the 50-year-old man who was in critical condition was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, where his condition began to improve, Kurtz said.

Authorities said about 50 cars worth of traffic accumulated at 8:46 a.m. after officials closed down all southbound lanes of Newport Coast Drive near the offramp.

Both Newport Beach and Irvine police officers assisted with traffic direction, as streets in both cities were affected.

It was unclear how long traffic would be blocked, CHP Officer Denise Quesada said.

Please update the story with the latest information. The i8 did a phenomenal job protecting the driver.

"The cement mixer's driver, a 49-year-old man from Orange, received minor injuries and was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana. The BMW's driver, a 49-year-old Newport Coast woman, and the Toyota pickup's driver, a 40-year-old Santa Ana man, were taken to Mission Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries, the CHP said. The Honda Accord's driver was not injured. "

damn that's crazy!

These things happen all the time. People cut off trucks and cause accidents. I'm not suggesting this isn't the truck driver's fault either, but based on what I"ve seen in my area, it's usually not the truck's fault. (not the I8 driver's fault either, b/c obviously it was just a bystander.)

Holy crap hope the driver is fine! Just a few seconds difference would've changed so much!

So moving to CFRP was not a bad thing judging from the pics!

I saw the aftermath yesterday, it's right by my house. Considering it was crushed by a cement truck, I'm surprised the BMW held up so well...

The driver of the bmw is a friend's mom. She is ok, she hurt her shoulder and may or may not need surgery. Apparently the roof ripped off the car and they were told that saved her life.
I don't know any more than that, though.

Thanks for informing us. It's a relief to know that your mom's friend survived the life threatening situation and that she came through with no major injuries.

On another note, it would be interesting to find out in further detail how the sheering off of the i8's roof helped save her life.
