A relatively new i8 owner question

Hi All
I recently moved to an i8 from M4 and so far loving it. I'm pretty technical and curious about everything. One thing I had not cracked is where is the air scoop for the twin turbo buried in the back over the rear axle? Is the aerodynamic cavity from the bottom or the side feeding into an intake? If so, how low is it and how susceptible is it to suck water and get hydrolock scenario?

Thx for the responses.

What about the vents on both side of the rear lid? Aren't those the air intakes for the engine?

I don't think so; it seems to be the vent to release some heat into the slipstream. You don't see intake in the low pressure area as the engine has to suck air unless this is part of the aerodynamics to reduce turbulence in the slipstream ( to keep the flow within boundary layer)??

Then again, I could be wrong.

I'm curious about this as well. Also I'm a bit confused as to wether the i8 is twin or single turbo. My guess is it's a single turbo setup.

So basically it's a twin scroll single turbo? Two turbines in one housing? Still curious about where the intake was placed. The vents on the engine bay cover would not make sense as they're behind the car where they wouldn't be able to take maximum advantage of the airflow, those definitely must be for cooling. The rakes underneath the car would seem too prone to sucking up water.

Good point. I think i8 has TwinPower Turbo which is a single turbo with single scroll forced induction causing double output.

That poor three 500cc cylinders are working hard.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Something to ask my service advisor next time.

This should clear things up: http://s3.bimmerfile.com.s3.amazonaw...B58_Engine.pdf

It describes the B58 engine, but also shows that except for number of cylinders, the engine technology is the same as for the B38, which we have in our i8s.

"TwinPower" is used for any setup that includes a number of performance and efficiency enhancing modules, incl. variable valve control and turbo charging. The turbocharging technology used in Bx8 engines is a twin scroll setup, with two differently shaped fans on the exhaust side driving the same spindle.

According to this document (p. 50), all Bx8 engines have a single turbo unit.

Hmmmmm... Wonder what could have been had the car been a true twin turbo. Also, where in the world are the intakes?
