Parking Camera Failure

I got my new iX 50 a couple days ago and the parking camera and sensors have failed a couple of times with the error message parking camera failure. It resolves itself randomly as well. Is this something that’s an expected bug of a new car or should I get it checked with BMW Service? Has anyone else experienced this yet?

I have had no issues with my cameras.

What happens message pops up but works normally?

Can you recreate the issue consistently or is it random?

I would bring in to service because not normal.

I've had issues like this on my X3, my e-tron, and my Volvo XC90. But only once in a blue moon. If it is happening consistently should probably be investigated.

Just checked and it’s working fine again. When the error popped up, none of the cameras or parking sensors worked. I’ll monitor the situation for a week and if it keeps recurring, make a service appt

Probably needs a new camera. They seemed to fault. I had to replace the rear one on our Demo unit

The fact that the PDC display is also lit up the way it is would make me think the problem lies with the control unit rather than the actual camera hardware.

Set up an appt at my local BMW dealer next week, let's see. Hopefully it's an easy enough fix

Have you tried rebooting the system? Just hold down the volume rocker for about 30 seconds until the screen goes black. It'll take about 2 minutes to come back up.

My birdseye 360 display (whatever its official nomenclature is) only works half the time. Took it to dealer yesterday. Claimed it was fixed and tested. Pressed the PDC button to test and "camera failure" message comes in.

Took it back in today. Dealer says the tech remote logged into my car and can't see any evidence of the camera failure on the car's logs. I showed him the pictures I took with timestamps. Cue much puzzlement and scratching of heads.

I will post more as and when more is revealed in case someone else has the same problem.

Dealer update:
As reported last time, Tech remotely checked in on my car and couldn't find a record of the camera failure.

What didn't quite strike me this morning was that they did so without permissions - creepy and prima facie edgy to do so without my consent but hey ho, good intentions etc. Anyway...

After some to and fro with BMW UK to figure out the problem, the camera system is not working at all. How the flip a fix can make something worse, I dunno.

Apparently, the component that controls the camera also controls more important processes, to the extent that BMW are concerned about letting me have the car back.

So the car is now with the dealership for DAY 3 to fix an intermittent camera fault...

Update:
The car will be in a few more days. It seems to be problem with the ethernet cables that connect the camera component to other components. They think it will take them until Tuesday / Wednesday next week before i get it back.

Luckily, they have given me a X2 as a loaner...

Interestingly bmw has stop sales in the US on 4 models with id8 regarding the rear view camera, but the iX somehow escaped.

Interesting insight indeed... the service assistant commented that they are having to do some considerable work on the car. Dodgy batch of ethernet cables or bad design? I suspect the latter as apparently the tech is having to make a new wire loom for the fix. Otherwise, you'd jus replace the cable.

Dealer update:
New Head Unit required. No idea when part will be arriving.

I am being taken out of the X2 and provided with a loan car by enterprise commensurate with the iX.

Day 12 of car being with BMW.

New head unit didn't fix the problem. They are doing further diagnostics.

I pointed out to them today that they car has been with them for almost half of my ownership period.

That's terrible. Sorry to hear that.

At which point do you request a buy back?

It's absurd. It seems like such a simple problem to fix- parking camera doesn't work all the time.

I've asked to speak to the service manager again, and I want him to give me a plan. There is a finite number of components that could be causing the problem. I want to know how many they have tested and how long before they have tested them all. I don't know why they haven't simply replaced some more parts - shortage probably. They can't keep twiddling away indefinitely. I'm abroad for a holiday in a few days time- I've told them they have until I get back from the sunshine to sort it. So 14 days from now, 28 in total by then.

Also, the service assistant I have got is rubbish. He's a lovely guy but he speaks with a thick regional accent and mumbles so half the time I don't understand what he is saying.

Problem is- I love the car and I want a working iX so ideally they fix and no need for a buy back.

I've had a dealer buy back a second hand car before and replace it. I don't know how it would work in the context of a new car with a very long period to wait for a replacement to get built. Hmm.
